As the One Chip MSX has only one PS/2 connector, I'd say mouse support for USB would be the most sensible first step... and perhaps an analog joystick/pad would come in handy in time as well...

OK, but which USB devices have a standart way of using ?
Each kind of printer will require it's own driver, and I can't imagine every OCM user writing a driver for his own printer.
USB mice seems have such a standard.
USB storage devices do too AFAIK (but I still think there is no need in them)
What about other devices ?

You got the idea
Primary & secondary slot selection easily becomes rather convulse: I think 32 bit should be the new cpu/mmu "word", then only a reduced set of 20, 24 or more bits can be really used.
But I would design in terms of "32bits".
BTW Wolf_ did you receive my mail? (I sent you some time ago)

Yes, but my time for the moment is gone'ish (MSXDev entry, 2 TV series (of which one is a pilot for a new series) and other stuff), I'll come back to you after new year.. (or just remind me of it after new year <- most likely ). |

wireless networking
wired networking
audio
controllers (Wii mote? )
external storage
steering for stuff (whatever, name it.. modeltrains)
etc

Using wheel and pedals in F1 Spirit Well, I already can do this on PC with MSX emulator.
So I vote for wi-fi. Should be the most convenient and affordable way to add networking capabilities.
Just buy a wi-fi USB adapter in a nearest store... wait, do they require proprietary drivers or not ? |

Using an USB memory stick as a harddisk sounds cool |

it -sounds- cool, but would it be useful? (As in: we got SD/MMC already, and can - if we want to - already user FDD, IDE, SCSI and CompactFlash). Sounds to me like those 2 USB ports could better serve a better purpose than 'more storage'.

Is there any reason why SD/MMC slot is not enough as external storage ?
You just want to reuse your USB flash cards and storage devices instead of buying one big SD card that will contain everything you need ?
Well, if you feel it should be cool... go for it.

I agree with snout here. The USB should first be used for a mouse. With already having the SD/MMC-slot I also don't see the need for a USB mass storage driver that much.
We need to connect the 1chipMSX to the internet so it needs an ethernet connector, either wired or wireless. But do these ethernet options have a standard way of using? Like cax already mentioned? Else we all should buy the same specific piece of hardware for which a 1chipMSX USB driver in VHDL has been written or something?

Yes, Dumas. I know. But will it be available in large quantities?

Dumas sounds a little overkill for the ocm.. I mean you only need the enthernet part of it

Apparently several of the USB / Wired-ethernet adapters use the same chipset. See www.linux-usb.org/usbnet/ for more details on this subject.
I suppose to make this work would require some support at the hardware level (in VHDL/FPGA) but also a driver at the software level. Maybe that the Nestor TCP/IP stack can be adapted?

and if someone would implement the "BEEP" protocol (on the s/w or OS layer), real effortless zero configuration networking would be possible |
