more or less 64: no: it should be less than 64kb for technical reasons, and somewhere between 16..32kb is recommendable for practical/artistic reasons. But it also depends on how much S-RAM you have on your Moonsound. With 128Kb you'll have act according to it. With 640Kb you can have some bigger samples (tho still less than 64kb each!), and some more of 'em. With an average 16kb for each sample you can load about 40 tones in 640Kb, MBWave and MBFM can load 64 tones max (this is a limit of MB, not the Moonsound), so whatever tune will be: calculate at forehand what you're about to need.

(44.1khz can it be?) 192Khz could be! But (a) the mixing freq of the Moonsound is 44Khz, (b) the higher the sample rate, the more memory you need and (c) the higher the sample rate, the less musical information will fit in that 64kb limit.

and I use this tool Wav2Mtn... Now I have a MTN file ritght? Yep!

this file is loadable by moonblaster as a tone? Yep, but so are raw files saved from your audio-editor (assuming you can save as raw!)

Yez! Today (sunday) I think I'll throw out the bunch!
Unless someone has requests, if so: shout!

In the current package:
6 different basses, full-range sampled (13 samples!)
10 leads, mid-range sampled (9x 5 samples, and an epiano with 8 samples .. e'ish .. not really a DX piano or Rhodes, but not a Steinway either)
1 Linn drumkit, including a few reverbed versions of some essential sounds. In fact, this Linn is almost about everything you'd ever need for Italo.. ^_^ (note: the Linn is that piece o' equipment you can see in the Italo banner)
3 octave-seperated 'A' notes for pads, each pad has 7 filter-steps, so they range from sharp/bright to smooth/muddled/soft
1 custom designed orchestra hit, sampled every note within one octave (c..b) and at 3 velocities, in total that makes 36 hits

Note that in their current state they're wave files at 44.1/16/mono. So they can't be loaded into MBWave/FM right away, use MSD's tool or a random PC audio editor to convert them to a raw file as you need them. Also, because of their high-quality size they appear to be big. However, note that 22/8 is still a good quality for instruments, meaning a 1/4 size compared to the original size!

The problem with Italo is its wide sounpalette within the style and synths of the 80's. At a certain point I truly wouldn't know what to sample/create more. Personally I never make a samplekit in advance, I just create/add sounds as I need them. So, suggestions? Otherwise, stay tuned later this day..

So today the contest can finally start?

of course wav2mtn can handle samples up to 128KB (when they are 16 bit )

I expect the Italo Challenge will only really take off when you can motivate n00bs to booting MBwave and starting to compose something. These people probably don't have a 'random PC audio editor' and MSD's tool is limited to 128kb WAV-files, right? I'd suggest a direct loadable Moonblaster Italo Wavekit NEXT to the great sample package you created Wolf. Thank you for that ....

If that's true, then I invite these n00bs here to say so. What's the use of a complete wavekit? One should assemble that as one needs individual samples. As for wave samples, there are 6 possible options, the package would become much bigger then. (44/16, 44/8, 22/16, 22/8, 11/16, 11/8)

For those n00bs to create their own wavekit, feel free to use mine: www.jorito.net/files/ITALO.MWK.
You'll need 640kB sampleram in your moonsound to use it, and yes, I know some samples could/should have been better

Oh, and wolf has a good point about not making a complete wavekit. I mean... what samples should be in there? How big should the kit be? (I can imagine 640kB is too much for most people).

Anyways, Latok, you lazy bum, grab that wavekit of mine if you're too lazy to make a kit yourself! Be warned, we now _do_ expect you to create an entry for the contest

Wolf, I agree back in the old days every tune sounded the same because we all used the default sounds. People DID make tunez though. Having a default instrument set is easy and makes one take the first steps to Compose Stardom

In the old days ppl were also pretty much working in their own. These days there's internet and forums like MRC with ppl to give advice and help.

Of course, of course. I just wanted to point out that to me, it seems like you have to lure people with gold, beer, women and wavekits in order to get some Italo entries.....That's all.

There are not really alternatives, that's the point. With 10MB worth o' samples in this v1.0 kit, there's no way I can setup a wavekit that will suit everyone. One of the reasons there are multisamples is that there are suitable samples for each range in which a lead, pad or bass takes place. That's all personal taste. It's also the consequence of using samples, in the old FM days, these instruments always sounded ok, no matter the frequency.

Don't misunderstand me, I am VERY happy with this v1.0 kit. Great job! I only tried to calculate your audience ^_^

not that it HAS to be done with moonsound anyway...

fm-pac or musicmod should work fine too,
impact did everything with those 2, so...
