I think it's doable to have sw sprites using vdp commands+page flipping if we do not use the vdp to do massive vram move operation (such scrolling an entire screen).
I know there is YS saga series / coredump / Fantasm Soldier.
Any other good examples?

It all depends on the game .. These softsprites do take some time compared to normal sprites. You also loose some time on backup/restore of old screendata, and with relation to back/restore I wouldn't know immediately how to cope with SW sprites moving over each other.
It's nonetheless very possible, if the rest of the game isn't too intensive, then you could do it..

and iirc Bombaman uses SW sprites all the way.

It might be possible to have a max of 7 sw sprites (16x16) at 60 Hz and about 8 at 50 Hz.
At cost of the use of hw sprites that is otherwise the numbers are respc 5 and 7.
