The VRam is not related to the main ram, the VRam is the graphics ram and got nothing to do with the ram for games/programs etc. ! I really dunno if this 48KB expansion will work |

VRAM is added to main RAM on many (mainly Philips?) MSX machines. The VG8020 therefor has 80K RAM and the NMS8250 256K. So, the VG8010 has 16K RAM and 16K VRAM which is listed on the machine as 32K.
BTW, I think the majority of MSX games (on cassette or disk) uses at least 32K RAM, with also a high percentage requiring 64K.

Sorry, but this is not true
The main Ram on the 8010 is 48KB ! All 32KB games work on my machine, and with the 16KB Expansion, all 64KB games work too !!! |

I think GuyveR meant something else. For marketing reasons Philips had the tendancy to print the ammount of memory in a system in a strange way. The front of my 8280 says '256K RAM', which means 128K RAM and 128K VRAM.

Thanx for the explanations... VG 8010 has written 48k RAM on the computer, which infact means it is 32k RAM and 16k VRAM -> so the machine has 32k normal RAM.
What I want to know if this 48k MODULE will give my machine 48k normal RAM or 80k normal RAM ?
Best regards,
Tomaz

It will give you 80K. 32K in internal slots and 48K in the external slot.

Hmmm, but then is my Philips Ram Expansion a 32KB one ??? Cause I can play 64KB games without a problem |

This could also be a naming thing.
In Japan, any MSX2 game that needs more than 64KB of memory is marked as a turboR game. Same could happen with 32KB/64KB games. If a game needs only 42KB (for instance) it will work on 48KB but still be named a 64KB game.

Unless the program switches away the BIOS (which I think is done pretty rarely on MSX1) it only uses 48k.

It depends on a number of things. First of all: how did you connect the MSX to the TV? What type of TV are you using? (PAL or NTSC?) What kind of cables do you have? What kind of connectors does the TV have?
