A friend found this strange disk drive on the flea market. He bought it because the interface said "MSX" and because it looked like a 3,5" drive, but when he came home no disk would fit. So it's either a 3" or 2,8" drive, or something even more obscure.

There are no hints as to the producer on the drive or its interface, but it says "QD" on the front. On the back is a compartment for a set of batteries, which seems to be the only power source you can use.

Have you seen it before?

Yes, I've seen QuickDisks before. I even have a couple, including brand new ones. But I never saw MSX versions of them. I'm surprised they exist, given that QD is a linear medium so MSX Disk Basic won't work very well on them.

I have a Sharp MZ-800 with a QD and some musical equipment from Akai and Roland that use them.

They are 2.8".

If he's ever going to get rid of it, let me know. I'd be interested.

wooooooooooooooooooOOOOOWWWWWW!!!

so, it is like a cassette-deck recorder, but with its own controller and ROMs....!

I imagine basic's commands like.

BLOAD"DQ:",R

instead of:

BLOAD"CAS:",R

Is there a manual!?

And shit!, why the hell it has a battery compartiment.... It can use easily the PSU of the MSX available at the msx BUS....!!!!!

No, unfortunately it works with commands like:

CALL QDFORMAT
CALL QDLOAD
CALL QDFILES
etc.

(I might remember the command names wrong...)

64KB / side, then you need to flip the disk over. Loding always takes about 5 seconds... No matter how much data you load... Funny device.

...with sequential access, if you want to delete the last file on the disk, you must delete first the previous files

Dunno, but I always thought that quickdisks were 'fairly common' on MSX. I've seen plenty of 'em, tho I've never seen this particular model before. It has it's own ROM indeed, with specific commands. Anyhoo, not that rare in general, though maybe this model is...

Our friend Abdoulah kindly sent me a Quickdisk drive few years ago, but unfortunately it was broken beyond repair due to raw shipping, just like the computer itself. So it looks like quickdisk technology was popular in Arab MSX world.
