AuroraMSX: I don't agree. The format should be fitting for the real deal. Besides, ROMs can usually be dumped, so that it can be played in emulators as well. For MSX, cartridge is simply the best!

The only real problem with ROMs is updates 'n bugfixes.. The moment you create physical cartridges from a game you'll have to be sure the game is without bugs and perfectly balanced so that you never have to update it, other than that a ROM is the most 1337 format ofcoz.

@wolf_ Updates are no problem at all when using flash roms.

Are those cheap matra carts flash roms? If not, what would a flashable version cost?

I have no idea what's inside those Matra cartridges, but a 512kB flash rom costs less than 2,50 euro.

ah.. but.. doesn't a flashable ROM spoil the element of 'uniqueness' a bit? As in: 'this "is" not the game, it only currently "holds" the game, but it can hold any game instead' .. it's kinda the same discussion as with the OCM.

You mean it's no discussion... Anyway, flash roms can be protected after they have been written. After that their contents cannot be changed anymore...

Of course. If you do not connect the WRT you're done. They're flash but cannot be rewritten = they're like ROMs. And again, even the "original" ROMs were PROMs / EPROMs / EEPROMs, not real ROMs

Once again. I'd suggest to code first and then look for a solution. And even though, I still don't imagine what kind of MSX game would require such amount of space!

A simple adventure perhaps
(like sd-snatcher, fray, Illusion city, etc)

Maybe because of it there is EPROM/EEPROM too ... Not just PROM/ROM chips!!!
By the way, wasn't some MSX computer "EPROM" reader devices !?
