| A very dumb question about Open MSX

Okay, here's the deal.
I am not new to MSX. No really, I am not. BUT...
I HAVE NEVER USED AN MSX EMULATOR!
No really, I haven't. But in every man's life there comes a moment where he has to swallow his pride and do things he wouldn't normally do. In my case that's using an emulator. So I downloaded Open MSX yesterday and installed it. So far, nothing on the hand (you have to be Dutch to understand this I am afraid). But when I started the program for the first time, I missed one very little thing and that are the MSX-system roms. I only have some strange C-Bios thingies that only do cartridges. So my question is: "How do I make Open MSX behave like my real MSX at home(Turbo R GT, Moonsound, GFX 9k, IDE-CF thingie, Z380, Slotexpander, Music Module)?"
Yes I know, It's a dumb question, I am aware of this, but I really want to know. |

Leech systemroms from 'you know where', place them in \openMSX\share\systemroms (iirc, or place 'em in the machines/extensions dir directly). You gotta do something like 'test MSX hardware' from the catapult menu. Then it should work I think.
The more simple solution is: leech BlueMSX.

Google is your friend (or e-mail )
Once you found the system roms of the hardware you can just put then in the right folder and let openMSX (Catapult!) scan for harware.

Because this question is "basic knowledge" I suppose. |

BTW AFAIK the Z380 is not among supported stuff in OpenMSX. I think that you may end up with trouble also with GFX 9K support as it's not yet totally accurate. Other of your stuff should work ok also in OpenMSX fake environment.
IF you are using Windows then BlueMSX may be better as a first emulator as it's a bit more easy to use and default hardware configurations include already most of the stuff you need. |

I really can understand that issue! Formerly, I had some antipathy against emulators because they aren't the real thing unless mars2000you asked me to make the German translation for blueMSX. Now, I like emulators, especially blueMSX.

Maybe I should use Blue MSX instead.
@Tanni: You are absolutely right. I have a very well equipped MSX at home and never had the need to use an emulator. But sometimes it can be very time consuming to download something, put it on disc or flash card and then use it on my Real Turbo R (yes it is Turbo R, not Turbo-R or something). But an emulator isn't the real thing. Especially the sound. It always sounds nice, but never like a REAL fm-pac/scc/music module/moonsound. |

I use my real msx+opl4 for composing on it, openmsx's envelopes aren't 100% accurate, and in my specific case I'd have some latency even. I actually think the OCM would do great here: boost the CPU, timing is done by the OPL4 itself.. so editing should be a breeze.. I just hope the keyboard input doesn't go banans then (as in: you move the cursors and in no-time you missed your landingspot)

Maybe a special "Moonblaster for Moonsound & OCM" would be the answer. Or mouse control...

yum, yes, emulators aren't the real thing, of course not. But they are very convenient and less time consuming to use. I used my CeTec MPC-80 and my HB 75-D for a long time, until my Sony disk drive went defective. Then, I got 2 MSX2 form a friend of mine, but these tow MSX computers also have defect disk drives. They would require a lot of space, too, at least for the TV set. (I don't watch TV any more and put my TV set away.) So, for many years, I haven't had a working computer at all. It was hard to admit to myself that nowadays it is essential to have a PC and even to use Windows. (Maybe some day there will be some exorcist software to erase pron, satans rock and -- most important -- Windows from our PCs.) Last year, I bought a laptop and resumed working with MSX via blueMSX emulator, even if it isn't the real thing. Holding a 3.5" disk in my hands is still a good feeling, but USB sticks are much better and more convenient and more robust and have more capacity, i.e. an ideal replacement for disks.
By the way, did you attended Bussum 2003?

To solve your "fast cursor-syndrome". Just click the right position in BMWave
@Tanni: Yes. I attended that fair. I even did a small lecture there about Bombaman, or maybe that was Tilburg 2003. However. I was there. |
