Consider this:

1) you can load from the ram the objects in the rooms as you can safely take your time passing from a room to another
2) all moving objects are few, small and slow
3) you have 2 pages for duble buffering
4) you can use soft sprites having as working area the room under the borders
5) you can do screen split and use a bit of the second page for storing animations and as larger workspace
6) you can do ram/vram transfer of animations frames you cannot fit under the borders

So, why not using screen 8 at least once in 25years?
I think that isometric games are a good field for exploiting screen 8 and in general the 2pages modes (I think to 2+also)

so what about alien 8 in screen 8 ?

Probably ram limitations?it would require too much ram and vram to have a game in screen 8?

If you stick to compatibility, you only have 64Kb VRAM to play with :-(

You shouldn't consider 64k VRAM. It's so rare that you can safely assume 128kB on MSX2 and up.

About isometric color full games on msx1. Look at disc warrior from alligata, or zaxxon.

They are for msx1 and look not so bad. Altered b. could be similar.

This may seem off topic but Ι found in the world of spectrum website a program that is supposed to be an zx spectrum emulator for msx.Unfortunately it only emulates basic programs and not machine code but....since msx and spectrum have a z80 and the ula is so inferior to the 9938,would not it be possible to create a good spectrum emulator for msx?Since spectrum only uses 6 kbytes for video ram,and since even the audio chip is the same on the spectrum +3 then is it not possible what i say?

Also the penalty of having to use outs to access the video ram i think is not a big price since on the msx we have 128 kb of video ram and of course imagine:Spectrum games without the color clash effect!

Again if all these seem crazy please disregard them

Almost all, I would say. If you are referring to big hits released worldwide for the rest of 8bit/16bit home computers:

Now I remember some others:

Hey! almost all of those games are very difficult to make on msx1 using hw sprites, and without HW sprites improving quality ( read: colorfull grpx) is somewhat hard....

Almost all of those games have big giant sprites and the requirement of multicolor charathers. flickering will be to much....

Of course things can become little different on an msx2 if we do not want any kind of horizontal scroll...

Will be graphically excellent, and may be also not so much slower than the screen2 counterpart...

Well, I can't speak for the others, but I believe we can have those games in MSX using hardware sprites. Ok, the characters will be small compared to the original. Ok, they won't be as colorful as the original. Ok, even with this limitations, we could still have some flickering and the colors may not be exactly as the original game. I don't see this as a problem. We must remember this is MSX. Those limitations define what our machine is. Besides, even if we could develop these games exactly as the original, what's the point? If you want to run the original game, just use an emulator or buy the original machine. Maybe it is just me, but I want to play the MSX version of these games and I'll be happy if they use everything the MSX can do, I don't want to play the same, exactly original game using my MSX. The problem with the ZX ports is that they are the ZX version, so it is good to the ZX users, but not to the MSX users, whose machine have some advantages and limitations when compared to the ZX. That's why I can't wait for DVik's Ghost and Globins, because I believe it will be, like Operation Wolf, the true MSX version of a classic game.

Amen. I totally agree. Use the power and limitations of our beloved MSX system. I am really interested in a remake of Starquake. Imagine this. MSX2(+), multi layer scrolling, "Contra-like" graphics, FM music, published on cartridge...

Sorry, I need a tissue now

I think they could be good on msx2, however. Most of these could be done using sw sprites.
