MSX eprom cart for testing?

Does anyone sell a socketed MSX cartridge that would allow burning an eprom to test software on a real MSX?

I think Matra mentioned something about this. But, I never got a reply to an e-mail asking about obtaining one.

Raster, afaIk Matra doesn't deliver those, but only an opportunity to put tested & working (final) software on cartridge. What you're looking for is an EPROM burner device. Those are pretty rare nowadays. Better to create a ROM image of your software and use LoadROM or something lik e that.

Or use Pazo's MegaFlashROM device and flash the ROM directly from your MSX drive...

i would imagine you could just make your own - open an MSX cartridge... desolder the rom chip... put a socket in its place - altho i am new to MSX hardware... the only cart i've ever opened had a very simple layout... i dont know if there are other MSX cart mappers but there probably are

16/32KB EPROM.
Yes, it should work!
In fact most cartridges on Brazil were EPROM (without socket) boards ... desoldering one and inserting a EPROM socket would do the service!

The EPROM chips were the same type used on Atari 2600 VCS or Coleco Vision .

I think that Manuel Pazos's Megaflash Scc cartridge is the best option these days.

Advantages?
Too many!
Very cheap, you can flash the cartridge many many times without a risk. You have scc option for games that support it.You can put multiple games on it and with a boot screen to choose what game to load.Support for megaroms and normal roms.
Also with a modified disk rom you can have a virtual disk drive (read only though) for machines that never had disk drives installed.

I got one and i am very very happy.I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to do such things.

Is there any way to get brand new SCC chips?

There are some disadvantages of Megaflash SCC cartridge ... If this is the old project, it use a Konami SCC ROM mapper and sound chip. Old games were killed to get those chips, in fact this should be the old technique of disabling a ROM chip and replacing the contend of the original cartridge.

For old games, it is similar to the concept adopted on the Snatcher SCC Sound Cartrige. This cartridge could be used for games up to 64 KB and will hold the contend for a short period of time, enough to turn off the computer, retire the cartridge and re-inserting on (possible another) computer ...

On consoles like Atari 2600, it seems possible to use 4/8KB games without problem. Bigger games would use some sort of memory banking for switch the contend of the ROM (or EPROM) chips.

16KB EPROM (128Kbits) 27C128
32KB EPROM (256Kbits) 27C256

It would be possible to use a megabit ROM/EPROM, but it will need some sort of bank switch address.
For playing old Konami games using the SCC, it would be possible to use a MegaRAM cartridge inserted into a slot expander without the need to open any Konami cartridge.

16KB EPROM, 32KB EPROM ...
Brazilian EPROM cartridges, it is easy to open the cartridges, de-soldering the EPROM would not be a problem at all, it would be possible even to close the case after the procedures ...

EPROM chips, Erasers and Programming Kits are very easy to find!
There are dozens of them for sale on the Internet ... Even now, their should be easier to buy than before! Only the specific software for MSX is something more difficulty to get .

There are numerous services that would erase and write the contend of a ROM file direct to a EPROM chip, it is even possible to buy the KITS!

@Yukio: As far as I know the SCC Flash ROM uses 'new' SCC chips that are still in stock somewhere.

This newpost only reinforces that old Konami SCC cartridges were probably used for the early versions of MegaFlashROM SCC, 'new' cartridges would not use "damaged" Konami ROM cartridges. Anyway, this project is based upon old technology from Konami. Nothing 'exact new' ... A part from the "MegaFlashROM" chips!!!

EPROM Burner.
Normal 32KB EPROM cartridge.
Don't change the fact that EPROM reader/writer are easier to buy and sometimes, more common than Masked ROM for games.

I don't get you point. MegaFlashROM SCC cartridges are made with new (not used) componets (PCB, flash memory, DAC, SCC and cartridge case) I think EPROM technology is quite obsolete these days, and not very useful for testing and playing ROMs on a real MSX. Also, it is easier to read/write cartidges with your MSX than with an external hardware.
Anyway, it is nice to hear that all MegaFlashROM buyers are really happy with the device.

Not every MSX would have 64KB RAM. Some of them would use 16KB RAM (without Disk Drive) or even 8KB RAM! For cartridge games, the normal is 8KB RAM, the rest of the program would be on EPROM/BIOS ROM ...

EPROM chips could be used to make brand new cartridges, I don't think that their are useless ... Sure there is the price tag, but it is easier to get those things today. If there will be a market for 5000-50000 new games equipped with EPROM is another history.

Also the topic was asking specifically for EPROM carts for tests! The substitution method using old cartridge should work fine ...

The (old) newpost also mention about a basic cartridge for non megarom games. In the past there was several test boards around. For odd reasons none of them came equipped with a socket!
