I know everyone's heard this 1000000000000 times before and with the impending release of MGS4 you'll probably hear this 100000000000000 times again, but i am a huge metal gear fan, i have been since i was 8 years old and i stayed up alllllll night to complete MGS:Tactical Espionage Action near it's release. I was so happy to get through the whole thing, and i had to play it again and again and again. I still play all the PSX and PS2 versions of the game to this day, i can't count how many times i've completed each. When i was 10 i discovered that there were two earlier games release on older consoles. From that day it's been my dream to own and play these. I know it's expensive these days but before i can get them i need an MSX. I wanted to know if anyone had any leads on an MSX being sold at a fair price because im so unbelievably into games and particularly MG that my life will not be over until i have those games. So thanx peeple and keep on gaming!

Thanks for the interest in MSX You can buy MSX2 machines for only a few quid, really!! Why don't you check ebay or something.

For playing Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2 you will need an MSX2 system (or MSX2+ or MSX turboR). An MSX1 machine will not do.

You could also try an MSX emulator such as blueMSX or openMSX....

The real deal beats the living crap out of emulators though, but that's my experience.

Tip: When you see things like 'OMFG cheap MSX Yamaha CX5M only US$1200', it's time to look at another ad Nah, seriously, the best thing to do is looking for a Philips MSX2 (8245/8250/8255/8280 whatev...) or Sony HB F500, F700, these are the most common MSXes. Lately, there's a lot of Japanese import like Panasonics and stuff. As Latok said, eBay is the most probable source of satisfying results

thanx for the quick reply. I checked ebay uk and came up with one MSX at a low price but i can see it getting higher as it has 6 days of bidding left. I will check ebay.com as well though for an MSX 2. I've also asked my mother to ask around her friends as you never know when someone has one lying around in their attic! I found an old Commodore 64 in mine just last month! Sadly it;s a littlle busted and missing parts but that will happen with years of being at the bottom of a cupboard. But i would really love to own hard copies of the games, it would be a prize in my collection and well worth having. Besides, even though i wasn't alive for the 2nd Gen consoles i'm really into my retro gaming and it'd be great to be able to have a bunch of old games! Thanx very much for the info

[D-Tail], thanx for the info. I had a look on ebay and only came up with an MSX, no MSX2s from any of the manufacturers u metioned. But thank you for your info, i'll keep a sharp eye out. But if anyone else has any leads i'd really appreciate it. Thanx peeple

You'll probably need to pay more for the original Metal Gear games than for the MSX system itself. An MSX2 is not really expensive (shipping might be, of course). An original Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake might cost you around 150 euros though. A Metal Gear 1 has become more and more expensive as well lately, but you should be able to get one for between 50 and 100 euros. An MSX2 system on itself shouldn't cost you more than 50 euros at most.

Be aware of the fact that the original Solid Snake cartridge is only available in Japanese. There is an English version (patch) downloadable somewhere on the internet, but you can't use this on your cartridge.

Yeh, im nt so worried about the cost, im willing to pay it and im aware of the prices it can get to. But im pretty sure Metal Gear is available in English it's just extremely different from the Japanese but alot has been removed and changed like names and radio conversations and also there's alot of 'Engrish' and spelling mistakes. But like i sed, im pretty sure its in English somewhere. but i do want the original Japanese as i'm currently studying the language and it would be good practice for my reading(",)

Oh, in that case you should watch out when buying a Panasonic (or any other Japan-released MSX2): the Metal Gear game will detect it's a Japanese computer and display only Japanese texts. It might be better for you to have an international MSX then, so that the game will show up in 'Engrish'

Metal Gear was released in English indeed, but Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake was not, as Rikusu said.

You'll not gonna find a MSX2 on eBay UK easily. Better try to look for it on eBay Europe, right now there're several of them at very fair prices.

Goto www.bas-ditta.info and buy yourself a cheap MSX 2 computer. He got an english page with list of hardware for sale. That's where I bought mine and which I am happy with. MSX 1 computers can be found on ebay from € 10 and higher.

@kurt5494 :

Actually, you can play the english version on a MSX2 computer, provided that you use either an SCC MegaFlashROM cartridge (you can buy it here : personales.mundivia.es/mpazos/flashrom/index2.html) or you can have someone to build you an 512Kb SCC SRAM cartridge from a donor Konami SCC MegaROM.

Then you can load the program in the cartridge, and trick the computer in thinking that he is running the genuine thing.

If you want to do it in Japanese, just get a Japanese MSX2 (any one will do) and get the original Japanese Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. THey're expensive indeed. The Japanese MSX2 should not be expensive, e.g. this one, which is just a random one, but very cheap. (It is far from ideal otherwise, but it will do the job; saving in Metal Gear 2 is a lot easier when having a working disk drive, though!)
