This kind of stuff usually happens during system upgrades or mainainance. I'm sure there's nothing to worry about, it'll probably only gonna take a couple of hours.

Yeah ... and this is really worse as I first expected. Now we are trying to analyze what has happened with the community, but the only thing I can say right now is that the database from the smf forums has been completely deleted. Now we are into the task of find a recent backup of it, but we can count on months of messages being lost  .
When we get more information about it I will report, for now we are checking all things to manage to find the reasons why this has happened . |

You should evaluate the possibility to move to http://groups.google.com/
or to some more solid platform hosted on the web
Maybe google groups is a bit flat, but at least does not crash periodically
