Games that MSX still needs and (probably) can be done...

That's it, let's talk about what can still be done in an MSX...

- A Tempest enhanced clone.
- A Mr Driller like game.
- Multidirectional scrolling plataform games (but if scroll is in 8x8, sprites must scroll smoothly).
- A decent racing game with a Life in the Fast Lane like engine.
- A decent pinball game, we can't play Rollerball forever.
- A game in the style of "Crusader no Remorse" or a "Rock'n Roll Racing" in Filmation.
- A cool turn-based strategy game.
- A strategy game like Cryo Interactive's original Dune.
- A game like Uniracers (SNES) or Motocross Maniacs (Game Boy)
- A first-person game. It was shown it could be possibly done.
- A decent Beat'em Up

Any other ideas?

Of course, racing and beat'em up games. I don't thinks there's enough of them.

I also want to see

- more Shmups please
- more Translation patches, may I suggest Last Armageddon? I would very much like to play this in english.

- A beat-'em-up (or Girly Block / Robot Wars II like game) with interchangeable/editable user characters and ability to save "level", "experience", acquired weapons and other achievements

- Another Feedback / Vaxol / Space Harrier game!

- Cool ACTION (not turn-based) RPG's

I admit, the question was "still needs", not "needs more", but okay...

I am currently playing this game on the gp2x: http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,25,2156

works for pc as well... bejewelled meets RPG strategy thing... nothing graphically difficult I'd say
but addicting nonetheless. Maybe the homebrew stuff on platforms like the gp2x or in general
games on the handhelds could be interesting to look at.

Try Fireball... I think it's MSX best pinball game. Too bad it has only one level...

Like Great Strategy II?

We almost got that

Ttat would be nice, but that's about Dune II, and I was talking about Dune I.

- An RPG in the style of Leasure Suit Larry or King's Quest, etc. Day of the Tentacle, if you like!
- Dome (Dune 2 clone) should be finished!

Scumm: art > code. And I think art is somewhat of a generic MSX problem here.

Wolf, I don't know if I understand what you're telling, but I think that the MSX has gorgeous art graphics in some games, considering its limitations. Shalom, Penguin Adventure, Xanadu, Jagur and Golvellius are quite impressive.

what I meant was: SCUMM games require truckloads of artwork, being: story, gfx (lots of!) including proper animations, and appropriate music. There's some code of course, but it's a mere peanut in the shadow of all the artwork.

The music bit wouldn't be a problem for me, but I couldn't name anyone I know who could do SCUMMM-type gfx, in a consistent style. (and has time for it, + actually *wants* to do all that!)

I (probably) can do this.
The WSC portable version is cool.

For similar game engines, there is Elixir plus several others ...
like:
Avalanche
Collapse 2
And of course, SEGA Swirl!

I can do this ...
The MSX2 sprites can handle 3 colors per line when someone blend two of them (two Sprites overlapping the same area) at the same point.

A decent "3D platform game" with a Life in the Fast Lane like engine.

Or with "Penguin Adventure like engine"

I mean... has anybody ever thought about having 3D Super Mario Bros like game on MSX?!?!?! It could be like Penguin Adventure, but it has another walkable platforms too... above your head!! I think there don´t have to bee more than two levels of "platforms": Ground level and one platform level above your head, where you can get by jumping high enough using correct timing. When jumped to upper level, screen could blockily scroll down to get you on the same level as ground level was. Use your imagination!!

It cannot be impossible to convert!! Of course someone can say "no way.. it´s too slow..", but it isn´t!! Life in the fast lane already has two levels, thought lower level is underwater, but anyway...

for racing games... I think ingame music (or several like in Outrun) is a must!! Or at least it must have authentic (preferably V8!!) engine noise!

I still say, check out ancient Commodore 64 game "Great American Cross Country Race" to get some ideas.... (thought it didn´t have ingame tune...) but it has some nice features...

- like you can choose your route from the map every time you arrive to next city.

- gas tank can get empty along the way, so there´s gas stations to "fill´er up!"! If you are "out of fuel", then you have to push your car!!! ;D

- you can see sunset and sunrise during driving...

- there are different weather conditions during race and you can select from the map if you wanna drive through snow storm or not...

Race game programmers, please remember to put lots of scenery in the both sides of screen... it soon gets VERY DULL to drive in Hyper Rally like flat world where only scenery is in the horizon...

Personally I don´t mind if someone makes road graphics blocky to make a FAST racing game!!

Maybe blocky 4x4 tiles can be used to make FAST "Stunt Car Racer"?
