Hello all,
As I am born nearby Eindhoven, it is not surprising that the combination Philips and MSX has always been a special one for me. Some years a go I started to collect Philips MSX software and hardware. Today I put my collection online. Have a look and hopefully you can help me to complete the list and (even better) my collection or just send comments/remarks!

Oh! I remember my first days of Msx, 22 years ago.
An uncle of my father worked in Philips factory in Barcelona and I've got my Vg-8020 here.
I had my 2 first tapes (Blagger (version that you've got) and Grand National of Ponyca). Unlucky I changed them in the past.
I want to know, because I don't remember, if Grand National was a title from Philips like a Vg8...

I'm quite sure that MSX LOGO (VG8103) has been made also in a Italian version...
In the eighties I still remember a classroom filled with a lot of Commodore 64 and one MSX, where we used to learn to draw with LOGO. The MSX was the only machine who had the LOGO instruction on the screen in Italian, and even with an italian syntax for the commands.

Speaking about Philips software... I still have here at home an original videogame made by Philips: "LA BATTAGLIA DELLE ARDENNE" (Battle of the Bulge) (VG 8192), that probably is the very first wargame ever translated in my language
If you want to have a look at the game, I have converted it some years ago... I'm not going to post here a link to the file because, you know... piracy But if you want to have a look at that game you can send me a message and I'll be glad to send you a copy
Do you know if this is an original videogame or an old game translated by some Philips guys (and in this case, what is its original name) ? |

In 1985 in my school all computers are Philips MSX1, with external disk drivers and monitors on green screen.
Children learned Msx-Logo and it's possible it was in spanish language.
Inside the box of the Vg-8020 there was a page of publicity of the Philips products with a list of all tapes with reference VG.

Guantxip,
I don’t know if Grand National was also released by Philips. I know they released Zanac from Ponyca in their serie oro (gold series). I own from that series only nr. 2 Zanac and nr. 11 Simulador Columbia. So, a lot is missing here…. An original Spanish/Italian software list from Philips (which you are referring to) would be really helpful. For the software Philips released abroad we really rely on people like you!
Cesco,
Unfortunately, I don’t know anything about Philips software from Italy. Anyone else? How can I contact you?
Manual,
I will try to update genMSX in the near future.

Hey, Manuel, aren't you Dutch? You should know more about Philips than us!
As guantxip says, I remember having the original Grand National (it is the same game as CHAMPION tape but with GRAND NATIONAL name). This came with a bigger box than normal tapes, similar to Activision games, but not so "heavy" box. In fact, it had the same box as the Blagger game you own. If memory serves me well, it had a different intro when loading. It appeared a ball from left to right.
I will try to recover the advertisements from the old days, perhaps I still have it. I know that I don't have anymore these games (my brother throwed to rubbish all original tape games but HoH, Batman and Monty). |

I only know something about the Dutch Philips. But it seems they reused the product codes for country-specific releases. And I know very little about those. Sony did the same, by the way.

If you want to have a look at how "La battaglia delle Ardenne" looks like, here are two snapshot I have just made:
( Translated: Stop 'em at any cost, General Eisenhower! )
There are too many locations written in English on the map... even in the first snapshot the U.S. and Panzer divisions are wrongly called "U.S. Divisione" and "Panzer Divisione", and not "Divisione U.S." and "Divisione Panzer". IMHO this game was probably acquired from the Italian branch of Philips and translated... |
