Hi All,
I have started working on a MSX Demobase.
I've got 60 .dsk files in it already so it's a start eh?
Now i did check here and there are some VERY nice demos to download!
But....they are all .lzh files:
I have tried to use Dsktool to convert them to .dsk but no luck.
I just don´t know how to do it.
I there someone out there that could do this for me?
I would help me a lot! offcourse i will let you all know what the progress is.
Kind regards
Sjakie43

I think most of the Linux distributions comes with "lha" commandline utility that can handle *.lzh files.
In Windows you need 7-Zip, WinRAR or similar tool to extract them (Winzip can also handle *.lzh with a plugin)
In MSX you can use PMEXT to extract lzh-archives.

Very good news.
I think such a database comes handy.

Sounds nice, ever thought about joining Generation MSX and add them to their database ? The software database already contains a lot of amateur software and some demo's.

ye know, it's been on my mind for like yeaaaars to build a dedicated MSX scene website, including all known demos to download etc.
Talked about it with j-war a few years ago and did some coding already but we never really finished it.
So, time to resurrect the monster?
Webspace is needed tho....

Sylvester, maybe ro and sjakie could join, but you would need to put downloadable files on them. No problem, but we'd need to get proper permissions to host them.

Hi Again,
Thanks for all the response!
Currently i am converting and adding all demo disks on this site.
What about music disks?my opinion is let's put em in,let me know plz.
I work with Gamebase as you maybe(not) know already.
Some demos work and some don't
I will set up a list of not working demos in a few days.
Eventually we need to change some things in the gamebase frontend,,
Change Games into Demos for example and other things i guess.
We also need a splash(startup )screen.
And we need some additions to the script in gamebase to get some demos to work i guess.
The .dsk files will be ok,but the .com and .bin files will be more diff.
I will get in touch in a few days.
I have more work btw>> vic20,c64,atari,amiga and so on!
I think that the msx needs a demobase too!
Kind Regards

If the demo is in .COM format, copy COMMAND.COM and MSXDOS.SYS files to same .DSK Make also text file with name AUTOEXEC.BAT with the .COM name in it.
If the demo is in .BIN format, put it to .DSK start the .DSK in MSX emulator and type:
10 BLOAD"<filename.BIN>",R
SAVE"AUTOEXEC.BAS"
... this way the demos will autostart when .DSK is inserted to emulator or copyed to floppy disk.

It would be said to have another parallel game/demo/program database, while we already have the great Generation MSX one...

"Said" or sad?
Anyway, there are some sites about it like:
MSX Café
MSX Café also cover some demonstration programs ...
It would be cool to have other sites that could host software with pictures!

Why would it? to have more diffusion in the MSX community instead of one place with the most extensive information about all the games?
MSX community is too divided already as it is.. |

Exact because of it! The MSX is not a monopoly (unlike Microsoft. Even Matsushita, Sony and others tried to profit into the DVD technology ...)!
If the "community" as you tell is already divided (sometimes with sad criticisms) is a problem, well for small groups or individuals home pages and sites would be great! This if the persons could stay legal about their MSX business ...
Maybe some decentralization could do miracles, some new coming members would be effective! See for example the individuals that comes from ZX Spectrum or Amstrad CPC scene, if their were well receipted it would probably improve the MSX scene as a whole !!!
Individuals like Prodatron and Dinoneno amount others ...

"sad" yes. Very sad. Bundling our scarce free time will result in much better results!
