Hello,

just installed fMSX on my new Nokia E51, but I cannot get it to work.
That is, I can't setup a machine in "machine setup". It says ' machine type: none', and I can't change it.

Of course I looked in the FAQ:
http://www.elisanet.fi/portal/s60/fmsxs60.html

which says that I should copy my system ROM files to [memory card]:/Games/fmsx/systemrom.
So I did: in that directory on my phone's memory card are the following files:

  • DISK.ROM
  • KANJI.ROM
  • MSX2P.ROM
  • MSX2PEXT.ROM
  • MSX2PMUS.ROM
  • MSXDOS22.ROM
  • MSXKANJI.ROM

Still none of them shows up in fMSX's machine setup. I have set 'use phone memory' in the misc. options to 'off', so fMSX knows it has to look on my phone's memory card for files, rather than in the phone's memory itself.
What else can I do?

By the way: I also copied one game (usas.rom) to the [memory card]:/Games/fmsx/ directory, which was easily identified by fMSX. Then why can't it find my system rom files?

Thanks.

It seems you're trying to use the MSX2+ emulation. For that you need the MSX2P.ROM and MSX2PEXT.ROM at least to be able to play .ROM games. Please note that the size of the MSX2P.ROM file should be 32kB and MSX2PEXT.ROM should be 48kB. Especially the latter is different than what is in use by other fMSX based emulators (others use a smaller, only 16kB ROM image). If your MSX2PEXT.ROM is not 48kB the emulator will not accept it.

You can create the 48kB MSX2PEXT.ROM required by the emulator by concatenating an MSX2+ sub rom image and an MSX2+ kanji basic rom image. As a concrete example, if you have the necessary system ROM files for Panasonic FS-A1FX for the openMSX emulator, you can do this by concatenating fs-a1fx_msx2psub.rom (16kB) and fs-a1fx_kanjibasic.rom (32kB) files together.

If this is too difficult you can also use the MSX2 system ROMs to play most games. For MSX2, the emulator uses the same system ROMs as other fMSX based emulators, i.e. you need MSX2.ROM (32kB) and MSX2EXT.ROM (16kB).

Does it also requires a special FMPAC rom ? because I have everything working on my Nokia N95 except the FMPAC.

Yes it does, a 16kB FMPAC.ROM. This is actually not really needed for the emulation of the YM2413 hardware but I decided to make the emulator require the ROM as it seemed some software did not properly detect the presence of the hardware without the ROM.

I have had some enhancements ready for a next version of the emulator for a long time already but simply haven't had the time to finalize the stuff. Perhaps sometime in the future... mainly SCC+ (SCC-I) and FDC emulation improvements that make it possible to play the SD Snatcher and Snatcher with "almost" original disks (i.e. with the disk copy protection cracked -- this is still needed because the disk image format used by the emulator [.dsk] does not support out-of-sector data).
