Ever since European countries decided to unite for economical reasons and especially since the coming of the new currency I have a feeling we're about to emerge in something like the United States of America... I have a funny feeling we're actually heading for a real United States of Europe.
What do you think about all this?

I don't see it as a threat of any kind. In many cases, it can be a lot more efficient to act as one and work together.

As long as I don't have to eat stinky cheese or listen to german schlager music, I'm not panicking |

every single country has its own government, in what form that may be. No country will ever give away the power to rule its own country. So, bruxelles is an addition to nation-wide government but will never take over or something.

those commercials on tv about the german schlager music isn't helping then, since you never know when they're about to transmit that one again (like every other commercial by the way) otherwise you could've zapped around it. |

but slowly, and surely (doesn't that sound familiar?), all government stuff is equalized. Sounds like the beginning of the USE (no need the spell it all out right? ). Anyway, let's hope all countries will keep their independent cultures and stuff.
Otherwise, what language would be the European standard? French, German, English... Personally, I'd vote for good old Dutch any time. |

Note that the states of united america ( ) also each have their own laws. |

I rest my case
You just stating that should raise questions about the governmental issues. It's simply quite the same as it is right here. Every country (state) has its own laws, all countries (states) have the same currency, borders between countries (states) within the union are almost gone... you see the dazzling similarities? |

Hmm, recent developments showing the inability of Europe to come to a common European stand about the very important Iraq issue shows me that a United Europe is actually farther away then ever... |

Do you think the USA doesn't have these issues in the different states then? |

Absolutely, but the USA do have a common policy considering Foreign Affairs. And exactly that is what may prove to be impossible in Europe.

How long did you think that took? The USA wasn't made in 10 minutes you know, with all their common policies and stuff. I think in time the EU will have a common policy as well, which will bring us back to the initial thing... |
