I just got a CX5M Music Computer off of ebay for, I would say a reasonable price.
I haven't found any info on whether or not they would be able to play normal MSX1 game
carts. Would they? I wasn't sure because based on what I read the CX5M is sort of specialized.
Any info regarding this matter would be very helpful!
Thanks guys!
I'm an MSX n000000b if you didn't already figure that out.

The CX5M should be able to play any MSX1 game. However, it doesn't display japanese text correctly in some games such as Digital Devil Story.

Any MSX1 game that requires 32kB RAM or less should work on it, indeed.

Hmm...I wonder.
Which japanese MSX1 cartridges require more than 32kB RAM?

oh hai millslolol.
I just fired it up today. I sure don't know what I'm doing.
Does anyone have scans of the FM Music Composer II Manual?
I figured out how to input notes, but that's it! I'd even buy a manual
off of someone if they had one. The only manuals I have are to the SFG-05
and the BASIC manual.

mm, interesting, since a while all kinds of non-msx-ppl show up from the chipmusic scene.. where do you ppl all come from? Vorc? Why/how do you decide to give the MSX (imho the most versatile soundmachine among the 8bit systems) a try?

they dont have a manual for composer ii .
I came from theshizz.org , but I don't make chiptunes per se, just game inspired music.
I like how the MSX sounds, so I thought I might give it a shot.
Moonstone... how do I get a hold of that?
Would it even work with mine since it uses FM synthesis?

another question.
if i played a regular msx cart... would it use the FM sound or the normal MSX sound?
I'll have to get a game for cheap and give it a shot.

There are no MSX games that make use of the OPM chip in the Yamaha CX5M.
There are a lot of MSX games that make use of the OPLL chip that is in the Panasoft FM-PAC and several MSX2+ models and the turboR. However, most of these are disk games.
There are some games that make use of the OPL (MSX-AUDIO), sometimes in combination with the OPLL. Most of these are European games, on disk for MSX2 or higher.
There are also some games that make use of the OPL4 in the Sunrise MoonSound, but they are all disk games for MSX2 and higher.
Finally, there are some Konami cartridge games that make use of the SCC chip which is built inside them.
Information on games and what sound chip they use can be found on http://www.generation-msx.nl/msxdb |

Eh? It's still a normal MSX1, so you can play all kinds of MSX1 games on ROM (physical cartridge).
Extending the RAM to a more useful amount is also possible, either via a cartridge or by building it in.

Where did you get that information?
The OPM is an 8 channel 4-operator FM chip and each channel can generate a different sound! I'd say it's more advanced than the MSX-Audio! |
