Well, somewhat great.. maybe a bit great, or a bit less .. anyway:

We're like finishing our Montana John game a bit, and we want to make sure our psg/scc balancer has relevant values. Because we don't have oodles o' physical MSX models here, we'll be requiring your assistance!

What you see in the file below is a stripped game, with actually only the scc balancer working. It'll show a scrollbar which you can move with keys/joystick left and right. Find the most ideal/equal balance, and if you've found one we'd like to know on which MSX model you've tested, and what the ideal balance setting turned out to be. Don't bother for emulators, we're not interested in those as they usually have their own balancing. In OpenMSX with psg and scc having an equal balance in the mixer, I get +3 for the game without extra scc added, and +1 for the game with an extra scc added. Mystery and excitement! Wouter? mth?

Note that it may be relevant to mention whether or not you have your MSX tweaked with a resistor in order to level psg and scc yourself, just as some ppl did with their 50/55/80 models. We need to know the results of as many models as possible, including the unlikely case where there's no way to make a reasonable good balance, e.g. when the results are way too soft or way too hard with whatever balance setting you've chosen.

The ROM requires at least an MSX1 with 64KB RAM. Not that this is lousy code, but it's just a stripped 64KB game.. G00d Luck y0~~

*click*

ps. yes, it may be a bitch to load if you don't have a megaflashrom :-)
ps2. we already have a tR-ST balance

The Snatcher Sound Cartridge already has 64KB RAM to load games or software ... Anyway, maybe I could test this later!

Interesting. I get +0 for
openmsx -machine turbor -ext scc MJTT-ST.ROM

where SCC_volume and PSG_volume are both set (default) to 75.

mm, just to rule out: try both psg/scc faders (or values) maxed..

At the same time handy for open/blueMSX for machine specific PSG vs SCC balancing in their config files. (though, in this case just a quick test by ear)

note that we amplify our scc waves, we don't change the scc volume registers, so when the scc volume is low, the sound may deform a bit (essentially the idea of distortion or bit reduction or similar effects)

wolf_: Have you done any tests on real MSX? If you did, can you make a short post with the format you want on the test report, just to make it easy to summarize.

format? what format?

Just the model of the msx and the balance setting that sounded the most equal, that doesn't require a format, does it?

And no, I didn't test on my MSX as I can't find my scc cart. nor do I have a megaflashrom.

+3 on a modded 8250

+7 on 3 (different) unmodded 8245's (also +7 with modded Sd-Snatcher cart inserted)

Thanks Oei!

Was +7 ok, or did you choose because there was no higher value?

Before you ppl start to wonder why we want to know these results when we *have* a balance bar:
- we want to know the extremes. We have a limited scrollbar so with these extremes we should cover all the MSX models. If someone has an MSX config for which the minimum and maximum balance still isn't enough then it means we need to stretch the range of our scrollbar.
- we want a good default value that suits most ppl.

yes
but not as good as the +3 on the 8250

the 8250 was modded bij Bas K. and i dont know if he fixed the sound or anything
