Hi! Can you please tell me about MSX View? What it does? Do you use it? And for what? Does it need special hardware to work?

MSX View is a built-in software package in turboR GT computers, also available separately. If you're not Japanese, it isn't of much use. If you are, you have a windows-a-like environment, containing a word processor, a program to paint pictures etc.
There is an english version of MSX View though.

It's not just an environment, you can also program your own applications for it. It's just like a normal OS.
However, for some reason GUIs never really took off on MSX even though some very good attempts were made.

I quite liked the plain&simple design of Meusesoft's HDMENU. It could be improved a lot, but it had the 'speed' you'd want in a 'GUI'

What very good attempts were made? (easy?, wios?, ???)
I think a msx just isn't fast enough and doesn't have enough memory to make a gui-based os workable. There are not enough benefits to use a gui on msx. |

I think WIOS is really a good GUI operating system (though I haven't tried it at all). The advantage of high resolution of GFX9000 and the speed of TR will make it acceptable in term of graphics and speed.
I think that Mi-Chi (the developer of WIOS) is already abondoned it, but, still, it is some thing I really wanted to see on MSX.
Any body knows about the state of development of WIOS? |

I can state here that WIOS never will be finished. Mi-chi is someone who said to us I stop cause NOBODY SUPPORTS my work. NOBODY WRITES software for it.
Besides all this, MI-chi is himself also working- well let we say- about 8 years on something that is so slow. But I stated it earlier ,software in general is something that is forgotten and that if there are concrete proposals (see the ide-section) you see that reations ( just one of JP-Grobler) take care of improvements every person points to Jon de Schrijder to do it and remarks as can it be ready yesterday. The software makers must be reunited otherwise as BIFI stated earlier zippo ...

I think that it is not a good reason for stopping on developing soft, if Adriano would think so we never could connect to intenet with uzix. |

There is a great difference between uzix -development and Wios -development
I stated that 8 years ago he started. So, people have had 8 years to show support.
Uzix is from a more recent date and is a complete program. Wios doesnot ,it needs separate programs to work with and makes it thus depended on more persons for support.

...however developers are not likely to develop software for a platform that is still under development and subject to change. The internestor suite is another example of a perfect base for Internetting on the MSX, but no support from other developers as of yet.

uzix only a program? I think that uzix is a big colection of program, and need a lot of new program for could be a really usefull and extended OS for msx, and in the beginning of developping uzix nobody write code for it, when peeople saw that uzix was a great project and offered adventages for msx some people write something, but not a lot of it.
WIOS could had been on this way if the project had been continued, at least I think so.

Well you still do not understand. I am glad I can at least i caN admit that something fails.
And donot forget it would have been our pride if it has been accepted.
After eight years, someone comes along and said how is wios, Why not 8 years ago , seven, six or one . You have to put once a line and say lost effort.
That is opposite to Uzix that has earned its credits and deserves more as well as Internestor suite.

8 years of development? If that was really the case, we should've heard more about it!
I remember only hearing about in the first year or so... I remember Bjorn Lammers, programmer at TNI at that time, being contacted for WiOS development. He showed interest, and nothing was heard since...
Also the user requirements (turboR+Gfx9000) of WiOS are far too large to expect any number of external developers to contribute the non-finished project. For example, at that time we were working on a Gfx9000 game. Games would work badly under WiOS and writing applications is a hugely different thing.
I think Adriano is taking the good approach with UZIX. He wrote an OS, put in the time to make it as compatible as possible (different IDE/SCSI interface support etc) and wrote some really unique applications for it. Now, if only some good english programming documentation would exist, I'm sure the support will follow. Why? Because it already does something, the advantages are clear, and the system requirements are fairly low.
WiOS could have been good, but it needed better support and more exposure(!) from its creator.

I fully agree as it regards the last sentence. Personally I never understood Wios but Peter Burkhard always give high up of Mi-chi's programming skills.
So, if had had noticed that people were approached and getting no response from him then he should know that. He comes to Tilburg so ...
It would be better if I had made that 8 years cursive. Because I meant no support from him. I hope indeed that support for UZIX will grow even as Internetsor suite.
As regards the product of Nestor I can say that we spoke in spain already with Nestor.
He promised to make changements as soon as our Ethernetcard is ready. Erm I can also not wait ....
So if someone has the emailaddress of Adriano. Well let see if we can make also in Brazil better contacts

I don't think there are many people coding C on MSX. IMHO it's better to make any GUI or OS in assembly, or at least give it good enough assembly support. That's why I think WiOS didn't get off the ground that well as many people would have wanted.
