I see a slight problem with the final showdown between 4 games at the end of all this: let's name these games A,B,C and D. If 40% of the people think game A is the best then game A will get 40% of the votes (duh!). The other 60% think game B,C or D is the best. However, they might have differing opinions about whether game B,C or D is best, so let's assume an even distribution of votes amongst those three games: B,C and D would then each get 20% of the votes. The result would look like this:
A 40%
B 20%
C 20%
D 20%
Game A would be the winner, even though 60% think another game is the best game!What would happen if game D weren't there? Well, maybe the 20% that voted for game D would all vote for game A as they thought only game D was better than A. Then again, maybe they all like B or C better than A.
The point is, if those 60% all think that games B,C and D are all better than A then game A would still win because of the division between games B,C and D.
So, to find out which one game is really better than every other game the current show-down between 2 games each should be continued right into the final (i.e. continue this pairing-off until there is only 1 game left).

To everybody complaining about the rules: IT'S JUST A GAME!
I'm sure there are still great MSX1 games that weren't even nominated!

Even so, the arguments against the rules are all flawed.
To take the last one, if 40% votes for game A and 60% divides their votes over game B,C and D, then in absolute numbers game A is still considered the best.

For the other arguments that are against the 'one vs one' voting system, their arguments are correct for games getting to the next round. But in the end, only one is the best! And that's what counts...
This tree-system is commonly in use in every day competitions.

Complain? I was merely trying to explain some inherent flaw in the final showdown.
Also, yes, it is "just" a game, but lots of people have spent lots of time replaying games etc to better be able to judge which game they think is best. Even though (I hope) they all had fun doing so I think that saying "IT'S JUST A GAME!" is an insult to the time, energy and enthousiasm people are putting into their votes (IMHO).

I think most people who are taking time to vote now also have taken the time to nominate the games they think are best. If you take this exact group of people then I don't think you can introduce an MSX1 game that wasn't nominated that would make it to the number 1 place. I mean, if nobody thought of it at nomination time then the game probably isn't that good either

Still, it might be that if there were three seperate votes:
A vs B
A vs C
A vs D
that in each of those votes A would lose. In that case, would it be right for A to win only because it's put up against B,C and D at the same time?

I have no problem whatsoever with the "one vs one" system, it's the end-battle that I think is flawed.

Yep, and carried on all through the finales and not stopped at the semi-finals and then turned into a direct match-up.

Oh, and don't think I don't appreciate the time and effort the organisation is putting in to this, because I do appreciate it. However, they themselves admitted this was their first mega-poll and they were still learning, which should mean that any hints/tips on how to improve things are welcomed by them. This being the case I'd rather give hints/tips/ideas now than after the poll is over as that might improve this poll as well and not just future polls.

If somebody got a bad idea about my intentions because I wrote <rant></rant> around my previous posting then I'm sorry, but I added those exactly to indicate that I understand some might see it as a rant, but it's not intended like that. If i really wanted to rant I wouldn't write <rant></rant> around it. But since I'm sure things like that get interpreted differently by different people I hereby apologise if it came across as a real rant. It really was intended as a "has anybody thought about this yet and do we really want it like this?"
