| Symbian emulator?
|
jurjen msx friend Berichten: 5 | Geplaatst: 12 Mei 2003, 15:27   |
Hi,
I noticed that there are some emulators for the Symbian platform (e.g. Nokia N-gage or Nokia 3650), like the gameboy, C64, spectrum.
So ofcourse what would be cooler than to be able to play your MSX anywhere, anytime?
Does anyone know of any MSX emulator for Symbian?
Please, please......

Tomorrow, I get my Nokia 3650......So this is a VERY cool question
But erhm......The Nokia 3650 also can play Java applications, right? There already is this Java MSX emulator, isn't there? |

I have a Nokia 3650 and it is the coolest phone that I have ever got I'm right with the idea of an MSX emulator for Symbian OS, I would be simply *GREAT*. JavaMSX isn't optimized, I haven't try to run at my 3650 (and remember that the Java of the phone is Java2ME, Mobile Edition or something like that), but I do not believe that JavaMSX would be playable at a mobile phone...
I was watching about the MSX PLAYer, since they are developing a version for mobile devices, but I haven't got any info about that... What do you think guys? |

karloch, thx for telling good things about the 3650.....I can't wait to get my fingers on that one
How does the bluetooth or IRda work? Do you need these wireless options to transfer data to your 3650? Or can you also use a MMC reader and put applications and stuff on your MMC? There is also this 'Nokia application loader' or something? Do I need it?
/me likes more info |

Yes, you will need to use IRda or Bluetooth to transfer files and install applications to your 3650. I have seen people asking the same thing about the MMC card reader, and seems like it is possible, but nobody has tested it, so you can give a try. I don't have MMC reader, so I use the IRda of my laptop to communicate the mobile.
This phone is horribly *GREAT*, Symbian OS let this phone have NO LIMITS. Thousand of programs are available for it, so you can convert a "mobile phone" in a turthly "smart phone". For example, I have a program that detects where are you (it's called miniGPS) and you can program your mobile to do some tasks based on your location. So... when I'm at the cinema, my 3650 turn off automaticly the sound and turn on the vibration function; and when I get out it will get to back to normal ring tone. That's only a very small example of the capabilites of the Symbian OS based mobiles... I'm still amazed with my mobile and I got it two weeks ago. xD You will be very pleased with the mobile.
Returning back to the topic of the forum...does anybody knows about that MSX PLAYer for mobile devices? (I don't know even if it's for Symbian...) Maybe that we will have to wait to someone release an MSX emulator for it.
Symbian OS is programable in C and Java, so... I think that porting fMSX could be easy (maybe openMSX, but it's a too heavy emulator for a phone, isn't it? |

Hmm, I have a 7650, running platform60 as well (essentially the same as the 3650).
I think there should come an MSX emu, or straight down game conversions for this platform.
In Japan, iMode phones can download old 8 bit games, which look like straight ports from MSX..
But an emulator would be cool, either in platform60 code or J2ME... anyone willing to port fMSX?? |

Yes, it's a very capable proccessor, the 3650 and the 7650 have a StrongARM at 104 Mhz (RISC). It has enough power to run a well programmed MSX emulator. |

well, the fMSX sources are available on the website, and fMSX is known to be very portable. It was already ported to GamePark32, so I think there's no reason why it can not be ported to Symbian.

Note that fMSX is written in C, not in C++. |
