Finally I had some time to test the 1.09c on the N90. First thing I noticed, it seems to erase the old data and rom directories. This got me baffled for a while, because the app still used some old config file from 1.07b and showed the roms, they just couldn't be launched. Anyway that's a minor issue. The emulator worked nicely. Indeed it seemed slightly slower at some times, but still perfectly usable. The sound, however, was buggy: first there was only noise, then it started to clear up but was still quite bad. But I really only tested quickly, I'll try it again soon and be more specific. Also I noticed something weird with the fast fit display mode, in Penguin Adventure there were horizontal lines missing from Pentaro's head in the map screen. In raw mode it showed correctly.

All in all, the emulator looks veeery nice now in the fast fit mode. The only real problem is with the phone itself, the menu button is so near the rocker (4-way controller) that I kept pressing that accidentally and was taken out of the application.. argh Nokia what have you done...

The directory "clear" feature belongs to the OS, the emulator doesn't delete files without asking the user for confirmation first. So I guess the installation procedure has changed a bit and when you installed the new emulator the OS kindly removed the old subdirectories for you. One possible improvement to this could be to move the data directories to some other location so that they wouldn't be directly linked with the application itself. For example it would be possible to use a "public" folder that could be visible and accessible directly from PC when you connect the phone to your PC with the USB cable. Then you could simply copy the game and ROM files from your PC to the phone without separate installation procedure and reinstalling the emulator wouldn't affect the ROM and game files at all. Something to think about for version 1.10.

Sound problems are probably related to the overall slowness Increase frame skip and/or try the raw rendering mode to fix the problem. I only tested Nemesis quickly and sound was working fine. Penguin Adventure has other issues with the sound emulation because it uses quite high frequencies and the 8kHz playback sample rate has some difficulties in reproducing those. Using a 16kHz sound engine would at least partly fix those issues but let's see if I can get both 8kHz and 16kHz sound engines to coexist in the emulator.

I'll take a look at the fast rendering problem, probably just a stupid typo somewhere in the rendering routines omitting some stretching code (perhaps a sprite drawing problem) -- I had to write all new rendering routines for the c version so there are plenty of possibilities to have new bugs.

Just finished uploading v1.10 to my site. It includes bug fix for the PSG emulation compared to 1.08, support for load/save/reset control settings separately from other settings and configurable 16kHz sound sample rate for phones supporting that. As usual, I'm releasing this software after very, very limited testing (I tried quickly on my 6630 that it installs and seems to run Metal Gear 1). If you run into bugs report them here and I'll try to fix the emulator :-)

Can you make it work for a nokia 9300 (platform s80)?

I could, with some modifications. Recently I've been (very slowly) porting it to S60 3rd edition and the main thing works already but I had some trouble with the menu code again so I'm dumping the S60 GUI for the menu and returning to a fully custom drawn menu. This should also make it simpler to port to S80 if such a port was to be made because there will be less S60 dependent parts in the code. Anyway I have to say that it's pretty nice to use the qwerty keyboard on an E70 phone with the emulator instead of the traditional dialing keypad only.

So let's see after I get the S60 3rd edition version ready I could try to make a 9300/9500 version as well.

The fact that I read Sybian all the time, does that make me even more sick then I already am???

I also have a 9300 so that's not a problem -- time is my only enemy I'll try to get the version for S60 3rd edition done quickly, no fancy menus just something that works, everything but the menus is already done and working ok.

I've released the first version of fMSX/S60 for S60 3rd edition devices. The menu isn't as nice as it perhaps was but it should get the job done. I actually uploaded the stuff already last week but my computer broke and I couldn't log in to MRC to let you know about the new release. Now it's fixed though so I can continue working again

I'll try to attack the S80 next and see if I could make a version of the emulator for Nokia 9300(i) and 9500 phones. I'll keep you posted on that.

WOW, I'm speechless!!

I tried the new fMSX for S60 3rd edition on my new Nokia N73 and I have simply no words to describe it! Full speed with frameskip 0 and sound enabled on all the games I tried, sound is simply perfect, everything runs so smooth, fast and awesome! Is this an emulator or a real MSX?! Best emulator porting ever, amazing job and kudos to the programmer.

P.S. Just a little, minor problem: the emulator seems to crash when I choose "create new file" in the menu (when i try to save the options or when I click on it in the load disk menu).

Humm... well I need to check with a N73 what's going on. On my E70 it is working. The thing is that for the new file input dialog I'm using a S60 system dialog because it was a lot easier that way, my app does not have to talk with front end processors and such shit to translate numbers to characters etc. It might be that it's the dialog that refuses to open and crashes the app along with it. Perhaps I have to think of a custom dialog for that as well -- you should never try to do things the easy way I guess

BTW, an update on the S80 project: I already got the emulator somewhat running on my 9300, I just need to get the remaining things fixed like sound emulation which is currently not working yet...

Good work jr! Your new 1.11d works almost as good on my N73 as the previous version did on my 6600.
But I found some (small) problems:
the scrolling is more choppy than before. You can see the difference with Space Manbow, or Aleste for example. Space Manbow scrolls like Gradius, with 4 or 8 pixels at a time. It doesn't mather if you use the MSX 2 or MSX 2+ setting.
And if you use disk images (maybe it has something to do with single or double sided) the emulator crashes sometimes with this error code: Toep.afgesl (Dutch for: application closed) Z80 USER-EXEC 3.
Do you know what it wrong?
For the rest: Super emulator!

Well I guess I would have to compare the current version to the latest "b" release on my 6630 to see if there is a difference in the scrolling. I'll check if there's something broken in the VDP emulation in the "d" release. Other than that, N73 like other new phones have higher resolution displays than older phone models which means more data for the emulator to process which in turn makes things slower For example on E70 the emulator has to deal with 8 times the display data compared to 6630 (double the resolution and double color depth).

The error code you mentioned basically means a page fault caused by the emulator's main thread so unfortunately it doesn't help much in tracing the source of the problem. If you could isolate the exact sequence of operations that you do that always or frequently cause the emulator to crash it would be helpful. I can try to test more with disk images as well to see what could be the problem, perhaps I catch it.

On a side note, I just uploaded a patched version "1.12d" to my webpage. It hopefully addresses the problem DDJ reported. I simply replaced the OS text input dialogs with custom code. Again, this seems to work on my E70 (as it did previously too, but...). The downside of this is that I did not (at least yet) implement any fancy input mechanisms so my text input dialog only supports basic multitap, no predictive text input or symbol popups. This shouldn't be too big of an issue with the filenames because it is probably enough to be able to enter numbers and letters for the filenames but for keyboard macros it's not so great because you cannot enter any symbols like colon, quote etc. I'll see if I can add a symbol submenu in the future but for now at least the filename input should be usable.
