Hi,

I have a little problem cencerning the writing of disks for my newly aquired MSX2. Whatever I try, I can't get a disk to format to the 360KB MSX2 format to be able to write a disk for it that actually works, can anybody help me on how to do that?

PC's are known to have problems reading and/or writing single-sided 360K disks. There appears to be a minority of PC's that are capable of using them. Whether it depends on diskdrive, chipset, BIOS or operating system is unknown.

I have found that if I format the disk on my MSX2, then I can read/write them on a PC. THe same applies to MSX1 disks.

That is my experiance

It also depends of your Windows version : 360 Kb disks are supported by Windows 98, but it's not the case of Windows XP

Aha, allright, that makes sense, but now I don't know how to format a disk on my MSX... I found out that even in Windows XP I can read and write single sided 360K disks, it's just that I can't format them so I can't create any more of them. I just got 1 from a friend, but he doesn't know how to format on MSX neither, but maybe I'll give it a try on Windows 98.

From BASIC:

CALL FORMAT

(or _FORMAT if you like ;P)

From MSX-DOS:

FORMAT

that's it.

That was very helpfull! Now I hope that my MSX likes my HD disks, if not, I need to get some other, but a friend told me I could use HD disks, so...

MSX has no problems with HD diskettes as long as you don't have a PC-diskdrive in your MSX (and as long as the HD disks are formatted on 720kB). If you have troubles, try using a bit of tape on the 'HD'-hole in the disk

hmz...strange, my MSX2 doesn't seem to like HD disks, nog even with the HD-hole taped... Can't format them, keeps giving me the 'not ready' message or doesn't do anything...And my PC doesn't format the disks in 720 KB, I get the message 'Error on disk, can't access sector 0 on track 0', btw I use Winimage for that on XP.

Did you try using normal DD disks already? Perhaps there is something wrong with your disk(s) or diskdrive(s).

I wish I could have tried, I don't have any DD disks...And neither does the local store. Maybe I'll try to get some from a friend. The guy I got the MSX from.
