Unfortunately, by using 'call format', not only it doesn't ask me about the number of sides (just whether to format the floppy on the A or B drive), but so far I have been unsuccessful trying to format anything. I tried with a 1.44 floppy with its HD hole taped up, but the procedure would just have the floppy motor running (and the FDD led on), but ater like 20 mins would still not return.

...am I to expect trouble? Oh, and I tried reading a 720k floppy, but no luck. Thanks for the info on MegaROM.

I have a 8230 which seems to behave the same way. The FDD led is on, I hear some noice, but it doesn't read a disk at all......

Maybe you could try and move the disk around a bit in the floppydrive? That sometimes helps....

Furthermore, you have taped the 1.44MB hole. On an MSX, that isn't really necessary. The MSX doesn't recognize 1.44MB disks anyway. Using a 720kb formatted 1.44MB disk on a PC is something else! Then you must indeed tape the 1.44MB hole to make sure the PC diskdrive doesn't see the disk as a 1.44MB disk.

Yes, actually, I know that. I taped it over to format it as a 720Kb in a PC drive to see if the MSX would read it, and vice versa (format it on the MSX, verifying it on a PC).

Sure... the 'mega' in MegaROM refers to the size of the ROM being in the mega-bit range. And AFAIK there are no cartridges with ROM-sizes between 64kB and 128kB, so both definitions could be correct.
Furthermore, a MegaROM requires a piece of circuitry that does bankswitching of the ROM in order to be able to project more ROM into the Z80's 64kB address range. Theoretically it would be possible to outfit a MegaROM with a 96kB ROM or something... Whether or not the name 'Mega'ROM would be appropriate is questionable, but technically there is no difference.

Using 1.44 Mb drives is not possible. Only the use of a LS-120 drive that supports 360,720 and 1.44 Mb floppydisk is possible .The software you want use as dsk , well i would refer to the ide-discussion in another forum. The chance exists that it can be done.
And I see that the software for the ide also could use an update for let say formatting 360Kb floppies since the ls-120 supports formatting a 360 disk , the software doesnot
