MSX GOTO40

Globally introduced in 1983, the MSX computer system ticks its 40th year of existence this year. A system that still attracts many retro enthusiasts, and for good reason. To celebrate this anniversary, a dedicated event will take place in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on December 9, 2023. Discover the wonders of this 8-bit machines with friends, partners, and MSX legends. You are invited to join.

When the computer industry took off - somewhere halfway previous century - it was clear that it was missing a cohesive and uniform experience. Too many different systems running exclusive software that wasn't interchangeable between systems. Clever minds got together to fix that, with the MSX system as their ultimate solution. While the jury is still out on the true meaning of the acronym, those delightful three letters could perfectly fit the Machines with Software Exchangeability mantra for sure.

When you're an MSX regular, you probably know very well how it works. Buying a new MSX machine guaranteed compatibility with existing software and even hardware. So, you'd simply pop that cassette, disk or cartridge into that wonderful piece of technology and off you went. The MSX computer system had its peak in the eighties, while commercially fading out early nineties. Regardless, for many, it is a machine to enjoy for life.

To celebrate and remember our beautiful - 40 years old - technological friend, you are invited to join the MSX GOTO40 event held in Purmerend, the Netherland - near Amsterdam. At this event, you can discover the past, present, and future of MSX through various activities such as talks, a unique exhibition about the history of MSX, live music, sales of MSX related products, game competitions, a lottery and other things. This is a good opportunity to come together, meet old friends, shake hands, and make new friends.

While we remember the original MSX, special guest and grandfather of MSX, Kazuhiko Nishi, will be present and talk about MSX version next. And if that's not all, former Konami music composer Yuji TECHNOuchi will dress up the occasion with a DJ set of his long list of game music.

It is clear that this is an event that no MSX or retro computer enthusiast should miss.

The MSX GOTO40 event will take place on December 9th, 2023 at the Zonnehuis in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Tickets are available online, starting on Saturday March the 25th. See you there!

Awesome. I just bought a ticket. It is very scary though, because the last time I attended an MSX event was in 1998 (Zandvoort). And I don't know anyone at all (anymore)! But I think there is ample opportunity to sit quietly in a corner listening and watching everything

Even if you don't know anyone it'll be fun to attend and meet some new people if you're so inclined. On average I've found people from the scene a friendly and approachable bunch. After all you have the same hobby/interet in common: MSX!

By the way guys: we hear a lot of people thinking of coming. Supporting the project as sooner as possible helps us tremendously! It will give us financial space of course and a moral boost. When hesitating of coming: don't forget that buying a ticket also supports the day of celebration for all us. So better hesitate about coming and not about buying. AND COME ANYWAY.
A stand selling some physicals of Lily's Saga would be great @bengalack. And if you need practical help don't hesitate to ask one of us. We already 'know' each other via the FutureDisk Twitter channel

As SysOp of Search For Adventure BBS (SFA) and as one of the initiators of 'MSX-User' in the 90's (not the English Magazine by the way!) ... I would have liked to enter with my family. Unfortunately that will cost me at least 400 euro's (living in the most northern part of The Netherlands)... Tickets are cheap, but travel isn't :-(

I wish you lots of fun though! Enjoy!!! I'll await the reports/photo's online!

Do we have an approximate timeline of start and end of the event?

I am looking at having a day trip from Dublin, I can arrive to the venue by 9:30, and the last flight leaves at 21:25, which means I'll have to leave by 18:30 or so to be in the safe side.

I want to know if I will be missing much, or if the event is supposed to have wrapped by then, to consider stay until the next day.

What kind of audio system and projector screen will there be in that building, and will it be possible to test levels/projections prior to opening doors?

I don't know those details, but it's a professional podium, so it will be good. We also hired a technician for the whole day. Hopefully we can do testing the day prior to the event. But that depends on the availability of the venue. On the day itself we can do testing starting at 7am...

The message from TECHNOuchi is cool.

I was wondering already what/how he would perform, the subtitle says a DJ set of Konami MSX tunes, cool! Surely/hopefully a lot of that will be his own edits?

Having Nitta as well is really something! :)

Procrastinating (such an interesting human feat right? :P) as well, I eventually ordered my admission ticket, but was too late to secure a buffet ticket. So if anyone decides on skipping dinner, lemme know ;)

I'm definitely sticking around anyway (drinks 'n stuff ;))
For diner I might make reservations nearby (I could look into group stuff as I reckon more people missed the buffet ticket boat?)

Regarding drinks 'n stuff: some rumor came to my ear regarding the org looking into possibilities of extending the event with some kind of official after party... (I think/hope no prob. I mention it? - it's kinda a cool rumor...:) Would definitely be sweet right? :)

I think the original location could have housed (quite) some more, I think at least a couple of hundreds more? Also the stand holder tickets being sold out makes me wonder how many more actually would have wanted one?

Talking for myself: I could/should have ordered my tickets way earlier (like the org requested us to do (so for good reason)...) Also under the impression the venue/area was quite spacey and it wouldn't go that fast ticket sales wise.. I was kinda late to notice the venue change (mainly checking MRC for info), that was kinda an important change/update right. Ah well, a man can learn (eventually)..

Anyway, yeah, I think it will be packed for sure. I hope everyone that wants to join will/can fit in the performance area(?)

Frisky (again (hi, sorry W )) I wonder if there isn't a nearby building/venue that can be rented, so stuff can be extended & sales opened up again? Getting people moving as well, more air to breath, festival vibes... Just thinking aloud..

(Talked to someone the other day who also waited too long to get his ticket(s)..)

The reality is that the event is sold out, and there is nothing we can do about it. It will be a packed Zonnehuis with 300 people and that's that.

There were quite a few people waiting -at least that what we think- since when we put the notion of selling out on our socials, the event sold out really quick. There no use asking for tickets, making waiting lists or whatsoever. We really got our hands full with everything that needs to be done for the day itself. We hope you understand that.

It's a pity for those true MSX people that missed out. There is a moral responsibility that if you can't come that you sell your eticket to somebody here on MRC or to a friend, so the ticket isn't spoiled. The community can handle that, we reckon. Oh: and if you can't come, don't be an a$$ and sell them for more than what you paid for it.

Well, I didn't read any of your socials, just msx.org, and I never even knew the event could sell out. No hard feelings though, december is always very busy times and I expected my chances of being able to visit around 30%.

The funny thing is, I didn't buy a ticket, because I thought I could never resell it when I could not come.

In every venue there's a maximum capacity. At Sonnenhuis it is 300, for this activity at least. Yes, as you said it is because fire regulations and things like that. They are set by Town Halls and/or governments. Going beyond these 300 could land the organizers and Sonnenhuis into quite a lot of serious shit, would an inspection or some accident happen. (God forbit it, by the way...).

Pity is that the original venue walked away. Now these 200-extra capacity (overall 500) would be really, really handy.
