My first SCC cartridge was already switched when I bought it. Though I've had some scary encounters. The first encounter was not as scary at the time because I was a kid who had no idea what he was doing while resetting his dad's VG 8235 by putting a pair of scissors in slot one... Not the most handy way to reset a computer (the reset button is just left to the slot and scissors have to be found first).
Later on when I had a Sony HB-F700P, an FM-PAC and a Philips Music Module, crap was just waiting to happen since the Philips beast is... well, a beast... It's too wide to accept anything in the slot next to it when it comes to the 700...
While hearing a buzzing noise from one of the speakers I had no clue what it was until I gave the Music Module a firm push... The noise was gone and adrenaline rushed through me... Back in the mid 90s those cartridges were mighty expensive and 17 year olds were not the richest people... Nothing got damaged...
I decided to cut a corner from the FM-PAC to let the Music Module not touch it anymore...

Nice story Meits!
The only slight scare I had was when my Music Module stopped working. Seems that the slot 1 of my WSX and MM didn't get along (probably a small gap) and some shortcircuit happened between board pins then a burnt resistor as a result. Fortunaltely replace and that's all...
Back in the 80's i had an Philips VG8220 MSX and a Nemesis 3 cartridge without switch.
I inserted it many times after the beep without problems, but in the end it went wrong.
The VDP chip or something like that was blown up. The cartridge was still working but when i booted the MSX i got strange colors on my screen. I sold the MSX for a cheap price.
After that i bought a Philips VG8235 second hand with 256k memory expansion.
After a few years using it frequently smoke was coming out slot 1.
Some resistors of the memory expansion died. But after replacing the resistors it worked again.
How do you know the NMS8220's problem was caused by incorrect cartridge insertion? I'm asking because I had the exact same problem with my 8220 but AFAIK that didn't occur directly following cartridge insertion.
Euhm, i presumed the failure was caused by insertion of the cartridge because the problem occured direct after the insertion.
I can't remember precisely but there was also a lot of strange noise.
naturally I did stop inserting carts after beep when I learned it could cause damage; I got an SCC with switch sometime after that.
After that I also had a card with a potentiometer (aka variable resistor) because of the 8250's sound balance issues, but I later built that into the machine itself because that seemed like a much more convenient and permanent solution to that problem. It's the only mod I ever did involving soldering that actually succeeded (me + soldering = disaster).
In my case it was the drive of a 8245. I inserted Salamander with the computer turned on and then turned on the light of the floppy drive. Thereafter, the drive motor did not return to work (in normal mode). By accessing the disk, turn on the light, but you could not access the disk.
I do not remember how or where, but I connected external power source to the unit and since then it works, but had to turn it off when not accessed the disk.
It's a kludge, I know, but at the time (I do not think I had more than 15 years, no internet and no information for repair), that was all I could get.
I've frequently removed the cartridge partly (shortly) and reinserting it directly after while playing Nemesis 2/3 and Salamander. This way you could jump to other levels
I remember my brother inserting Konami cartridges several times after beep and typing a Basic program to simulate a second Konami cartridge in the other slot to get the extra features. Fortunately our old NMS8220 still works perfectly.
I've blown up my Sony HB-F700P with a defect cartridge. It was inserted before powering on the MSX, but after hitting the power button, it didn't start anymore.
Luckily I fixed it with a new V9958 ;-)
Meits: It's supported by openMSX but not by Catapult indeed... (I think because Catapult was already not updated anymore after openMSX got the 'hot plug' feature.)
