Hi guys, I'm new here and I have some problems.

I'm a huge Metal Gear (Solid) fan and I have both Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for the MSX, I have the Europian version of Metal Gear 1.
Today, I just bought myself a Philips NMS-8250 MSX2, he has a 720kb diskdrive and 2 cartridge slots.
To be hones, I have no experience with the MSX computer before and I'm a true noob in this. Sad
That's the reason why I made this topic, anyway --> I played Metal Gear for a few minutes and I'd like to save, for saving the game you need to do this:
1) press the F1 button so the game is paused.
2) press the F5 button, typ a name for the save file and he will be saving. After that he asks: "Verify?" What does that mean? Control if the savefile is really there?
I'm from Belgium, just didn't know the exact translation for it. Wink
Well I say: "yes", after that he says: "verifying" after 10 minutes I stopped the MSX, because there still was written: verifying. Is this normal?
I started my MSX back and tried to load the savefile I saved before by doing this:
1) press the F1 button so the game is paused
2) press the F4 button where I come into a load window. I typ the name of the savefile and I press enter.. after 10 minutes he didn't load or something like that, so I guess it's not normal so I stopped the MSX.
I know that the diskdrive works because the seller said it to me, and also I formatted my empty disk on my MSX, he did that. (It's also not writing protection)
But I came on the internet and I heard that you can only save in Metal Gear by using a datarecorder, so you save it on a tape.
I don't have this and I'm not going to buy it, I wonna play Metal Gear ffs. Sad
Can I save my files to a disk?
I also heard that you can play Metal Gear by using passwords, so when you stop playing it you get a password? when you typ this password you will began the next time you start Metal Gear at the latest checkpoint, is this right?
Please guys, I'm a noob @ MSX stuff, can somebody help me. Sad

Thanks!!

MG1 can save to tape only.
You can rewind the tape, play it again and verify that the savegame is ok and the next time you will load it will work.

There exists some cracked version of metal gear 1 that can save to floppy.
Look for it on the net.

The passwords you mention are not for saving, but to cheat.

To go further on your journey in msx-land use MSX Links (to the left), and search on the FTP-sites like Funet and Komkon.

Good luck

For playing the cracked version of Metal Gear with disksave you'll need enough RAM. Unless your NMS8250 is expanded, it has 128K which is probably not enough, although it might... It depends on how the crack was done.

The Metal Gear version with saving on disk requires indeed 256 Kb RAM and 128 Kb VRAM.
If your MSX 2 has not his RAM extended, then the alternative is a good emulator like NLMSX, openMSX, blueMSX or paraMSX.

You must transfer the contents of the disk image on a disk, for example with WinImage.

You can also try Disk Manager (that you can find on the RuMSX site) :

In my opinion, MG1 can be played in 5-8 hours from the beginning to the end, so, you can live without saving at all, just replaying from the beginning each time.

Another option is to press F1 (pause) and to leave your MSX switched on until you will play it the next time.

Making tape-recorder connector and saving to tape is not that hard too.

Before the question comes up: visit the FAQ http://www.faq.msxnet.org/ for the pinouts of a cassette cable.
You can generally use any cassette recorder/player, the 'motor' wire is not necessary (you'll just have to press RECORD/PLAY at the right times).

I dunno if my MSX is updated, Oh I forgot something to tell!
I also have a MSX 2 VG-8235, maybe I can put some RAM from that MSX to the 8250?
