-Regarding the chopped sound: can you try to install the latest nightly build from the fixato server? I increased the default buffer size requested by openMSX so that you don't have to choose another value anymore in the SDL menu. I hope that the SGS supports this larger buffer size.
-Another thing that you can do to increase the performance is disabling the "reverse" feature in the openMSX console:
--open the console
--enter following command: set auto_enable_reverse false
--close the console
-Regarding the onscreen icon placement: I can choose the screen location per icon
