If you like turn-based games such as X-COM: UFO Defense, you'll probably also like Laser Squad MSX, as they were both developed by Julian Gollop. Originally made for the Spectrum homecomputer system, this game was later converted for MSX. Then translated to Italian and lately rediscovered in a misty torrent.

Since most of us don't speak Italian other than cappuccino, cicolina and buon giorno, we have the luck that well-known MSX user SLotman decided to translate the only known copy (or should I say copies?) of the game back to English. Sadly, as with most Spectrum conversions, this game was of course bugged as well. In a sense that this game became more of a working restoration than a translation. But now work has been completed and these are the main changes:

  • All texts translated into English
  • MSX2 loading screen removed
  • Original Spectrum loading screen converted to MSX to replace MSX2 one
  • Controls changed from Q/A/O/P (usual Spectrum control keys) to MSX cursor keys
  • Changed RAM detection routine and slot changing routine to increase compatibility. Now game works on turbo-R and many other machines… but not all. Unfortunately, to achieve this, the game needs a very big rewrite.
  • One word on the game info screen “FORZA” had its original position altered, so it would align correctly on the Italian version. The word was translated to “STRENGTH” (as in the original) and placed in the correct position
  • Correct mapper initialization on MSX1

Grab the game and read the whole story at SLotman's hideout.

I own an original copy by "Leader" (Italian sw publisher) and have preserved too:

Btw "cicolina" is not an Italian woman, but I appreciate the effort in avoiding to say "spaghetti" or "pizza".

Is there any preservation of the "version sold in Spain" with the English text?

I know it could be a dummy question, but how hard would be to enhance the game to msx 2 ? I see that even being a spectrum port, it is using tile based graphic. Moreover, it is a turn based game, so there are reduced problem with lags for screen update. Maybe a screen 5 port could be possible with some sort of PNT emulation.

The website engine has a "track changes" on news? I remember seeing something different than "well-known" at the news description.

Once upon a time a had the tape version of the italian LASER SQUAD.
It was an MSX1 version with a big package mede in paper.
It has a loader in screen2 very different from the version we can easily found with an MSX2 loader.
I've played many many times on my YASHICA YC-64 without any problem.
Maybe another version of the game?

@Manuel: Unfortunately i lost all my MSX stuff. In fact i'm looking for a cheap MSX2 and IDE+SCC+FM add-on or a cheap 1chipMSX for my Abandonware hobby.

@SLotman: in the second mission MOON BASE ASSAULT there is a bug. Sometimes during the fire section the game enter into a loop that make impossible to END the fire part of a soldier.

Strange - I played all missions here without any problems. Will have a look at it again to see if I can reproduce this.
(Are you sure you're not selecting one of the modes where the soldier fires until he has no more A.P.s?)

Since when? My site only has an ad bar to the right (with MSX products), and that's it.

I've made some visual modifications on "Laser Squad", specially for MSX2 machines:

gTranslate seems to go into an endless loop, so it's better to go with the untranslated URL I guess: http://www.retrocomputaria.com.br/plus/?p=5940

Go to the Portuguese page: http://www.icongames.com.br/msxfiles/blog/laser-squad-msx/ (and use Google translation!)

Only the English part of the site is 'VERBODEN'.....
