Retroforce is the team name behind this great remake for MSX2 still in development. For the moment it is expected the implementation of Screen 5 graphic mode, new sound effects, multicolor sprites, improved controls, 3 optional new color palettes and the usage of the SCC for the musics. They are being composed with Trilotracker as you can see here. On the other hand, you can get an idea of the final result of the game watching this promotional video.

There is no release date, the team prefer to avoid to fix a deadline in order to guarantee the maximum quality, this decision must be welcomed.

Nice presentation vid, good luck with developing the game! Smile
It's a very action packed game actually, I liked it much more than other war games like Front Line or the crappy Commando port(Senji no Ookami?). Originally it didn't have music except at the titlescreen.

Feature request: award extra bonus points for shooting the fat belly hostage instead of the enemy Wink

Great! Maybe this is what I need to finish this game once and for all. I'll be polishing the joystick...

Wow this was one of my all-time favorites on the ZX Spectrum! Smile2

I hope they keep the gameplay <-> controls (and position of walls, soldiers etc) true to the original. If so then I will surely look forward to this game's release.

What does improved controls mean? I can imagine that you are using advantage of two button joystick to throw grenades and shoot at the same time, but otherwise original controls were perfect already. I think it´s just a good feature in original game, that you cannot "fire" grenades like bullets, but there will be a short delay, just like in the real life. So keeping fire/space pressed down to throw grenades is still a good idea for me. I hope this can be kept as an option in this rerelease. Smile

Agreed! I always considered this a specific gameplay element in the original.

Core game is the same.
C64 WDW1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mM00hd4_6s
C64 WDW2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeDZCP5ZKvE

Of course they scroll on C64 ;) but they didn't do a bad job making it flip-screen on other platforms.
In all, it's a clone of Capcom's Commando(Senjou no Ookami in Japan, Wolf_'s Battlefield in Allosoftland), very popular in the arcades in the mid 80s.
here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmlM1KS7txE
and the shitty MSX port: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1BHyhCVkuk

Not enough links? Ok, here a bonus link, it's arcade Senjou no Ookami 2!

Yes. And I tend to think that Commando was, in turn, inspired by Taito's Front Line (which also got an MSX port):

So this is actually going to be a MSX2 remake of WDW1, NOT a MSX2 conversion of WDW2 (on MSX)?

I agree, the way to throw grenades is (/should be) part of the gameplay, and makes it a bit more challenging. Although it happens fairly often (for me anyway Wink) that nades are accidentally thrown out.. So some improvement in that regard can be made perhaps.. Smile

Cool promo vid. Is the gameplay sped up, or is it really that fast (looks too fast to me if that's the case)?

It might be due to the gameplay screen/vid being stretched (quite a bit?), but the sprites/characters do look 'squashed' (certainly when compared to the original)?

Anyway, looking forward to it, good luck with devving!

The grenades should be launched with a secondary button IMHO.
They made the the "press and hold" implementation just because they didn't know that MSX had 2-button joysticks (and the other 8bit machines used to have just one). The gameplay is ruined by the grenades being accidentally launched.

If you want to compare both techniques, I suggest you to try my version patched for two-buttons playing.

@mods: can I share the link to my patched version here?

A link to just the patch is preferred. Did you make this patch recently? Because I think it's worthy of a little newspost.

Sorry, I don't have a patch (because I modified by own ROMified version, not the CAS file).

This hack also includes the original loading screen (taken from the ZX port) what was removed on the MSX version.
If you are interested I can send you the link on a private message.

BTW I recorded a video some months ago demonstrating this version:

Patch-only is simply preferred, but we have linked to complete patched ROMs in newsposts before, so on my responsibility, go ahead and share the link.
