In the US Apple seems to actively discourage users of its products to stick to their old machines. I am wondering if this could be a factor in Japan as well. I have never been there but guess that companies like Nintendo might try alleviating people's nostalgia by releasing games which are not too different from old favorites. This way Nintendo makes money, people are happy and everybody (except for MSX) wins?

Japanese people have a bigger problem, it is lack of space in their houses. So they can't afford to keep their old machines. The worst part of it is that most of them were probably destroyed. It would have been better if Ebay and other auction sites were available in 1994, 1995. Most of those machines that were destroyed could have been saved.
