A way to play MG2 Solid Snake without accessing the keyboard?

I meant, at least for me the joysticks were first (beginning of the 80's) and then a while later there were pads :) Thanks for the tip!

For 'Western' people (and yes, I'm going to count Finland to that) who were playing games on home computers, joysticks were absolutely more common.
I actually remember game reviewers in the '80s and early '90s complaining about how having to use a joypad can bring one to "helpless rage". How the times have changed.

SofaRun is supporting JoySnes and JoyMega for most of Konami and Compile games (without using any patch).

Also, as GDX said for SNES, you can find some arcade joysticks that are Megadrive compatible (you'll still need a JoyMega adapter), or even buid one yourself if you don't like joypad (and build the JoyMega adapter inside of the box).

At first, I used paddle controller (pong console) then Joystick because I had a Atari 2600/VCS. Joypads became popular since 1983 in the world but Joypads already existed in 1979. From my first MSX, I gave up joysticks (1984/85) for most games because it was often more efficient. Joysticks are better for some games provided that they are well fixed (like arcade cabinet). For me, joysticks and joypads are both old school.
The proof is that many young people don't even know what joypad means. They only know the controllers with the two mushrooms and often shaped like a big banana.

You didn't have Intellivision in Finland? This console uses (bad) joypads.

Whether you patch the game loaded in RAM or the system, it's finally the same.
