The Konami MSX1 title The Maze Of Galious got the rubber glove treatment and has been pimped up to a true MSX2 game title. A team of international MSX sceners just released a free-to-use software patch to update your copy of this legendary game. With enhanced graphics and music, MOG finally got the treatment it deserved.

When Konami released their follow-up of their 1986 hit Knightmare, they dubbed it ガリウスの迷宮, or, in English, The Maze Of Galious. It's the second installment in the Knightmare serie. This 1987 MSX1 title is one of the most popular MSX titles ever released.

While in that same year the company already did MSX2 and SCC titles, the game The Maze of Galious was a standard-MSX1 game. Despite that, the graphics are outstanding with various display of beautiful backgrounds and impressive world boss monsters. It has a few excellent PSG tunes that stick like peanut butter; when was the last time you caught yourself whistling the Castle tune? And the game play is just perfect and smooth. This action-platformer has a huge map to explore with plenty of items to be found and enemies to kill with an arsenal of various weapons.

This glorious MSX game finally got the MSX2 treatment with quality images and ditto sounds. A truly marvelous job done by an international team of enthusiastic MSX scene legends. No other than Víctor Martínez is at the helm doing programming together with David Madurga, including Vsync and Joymega code by FRS. The screen 5 graphics were designed by none other than Toni Gálvez who has a huge credit list on various platforms and is the one judging screens on dev22. The SCC tunes were done by Jan van Valburg who did the Vampire Killer SCC version earlier. The Voice Set was done by WYZ, Artrag, and TodoJingles while 232 translations handled the multi lingual retranslations.

The result of their hard work is a free patch for your back-up copy of the original game. When patched, you get:

  • MSX2 screen 5 images (16 different colors, 32 in some screens)
  • SCC support
  • Dual PSG support
  • Voice set
  • VDP speed selection
  • Turbo CPU support
  • Joymega support
  • Language selection for English, Spanish or Japanese
  • second Konami ROM Knightmare or Q-bert insert at slot 2 for extra game features (optional)

That is an impressive list of improvements added without loosing any of the original smooth game play. Excellent. For fans of MOG this is an extremely good year. Not only is this patch a dream come true, there's also a new MOG game in development called Pampas & Selene.

SCC + Double PSG, of course...

One note: Double PSG is only available when you put the SCC music... then the rythms are in one PSG and the FXs in the other PSG...

In the intro I would suggest to have a few black lines under the font, or make a smaller font (less high). As it is now, all these characters are stacked on top of each other, which looks weird.

In the video: @ 2:19, that sound that's used for those repeating quick 'n high [d-e-f-g] notes, is piercing my eardrums like mad. You really don't want to wear a headphones with this. I estimate it's part of the SCC tone itself. I would suggest to cut that high frequency out or at least lower its loudness, it's really painful to listen to. Sad

Excellent work on the MSX2 version, team! Smile It's very joyous to play. Feels almost like a new game! I only have few nitpicks about it (not a fan of the current item shine effect and the chart pie health bars in Inventory, there should be a fade-in effect for boss summons right after fading to black, there's a space missing from Popolon's description).

The closest thing for a bug is the Japanese language still having Popolon and Aphrodite descriptions in English.

I adore the game, but what bothers me (a bit) is that there is no animation when Popolon uses a ladder. He just 'floats' up.

I tryed the v.1.02 on my real Turbo R + the 2048kB Sound Cartridge. It works perfectly. On OpenMSX v0.15.0 for Mac, there are several graphic bugs, and no water effect on CocoaMSX.

Graphics are more beautiful on a real monitor! :)

I was wondering, what the double PSG Will do, what kind of effects we will get when this option is activated ? And how can we use It on openMsx? Do I need to create a XML extension to have a double PSG?

You need a flash cartridge... MegaflashROM SD, Carnivore 2, GR8NET.... for example...

Anyone with second Gen OCM (SM-X, SM-X MINI and SX2) that want to play this patch in its full 2xPSGC 1XSCC glory:

I've been working on a few ocm enhancements for that generation, and the Frankysnd builds have opl3 fixed, sn76489 for your Coleco or SG1000 fix and a second psg specially for this patch B-)

A reminder that I don't have SX2 or SM-X MINI, only SM-X, so if you have a SX2 or SM-X MINI I recommend waiting until it turns to release (meaning someone tested and approved on the other systems) or do it only if you have an usb Blaster and is able to flash a . JIC file (like the ones from original KdL 3.9 release) to restore it back if it doesn't work. ;)

P.s.: if someone tests it on SX2 or SM-X MINI, let me know the results :)

Amazing patch! Thanks for making an update to one of the best MSX1 games. I always dreamed of playing Maze of Galious with SCC ever since one of the Fuzzy Logic demos from back in the day. And now it is possible! And so much more: MSX 2, turbo mode, the works. Really nice work!

Is there a way to not having to enter the very long code every time I die? I would love to play this game but I really suck at it and I die a lot, so it would be nice if the game could remember the state of the last time I typed in a code to return there at a game over.

EDIT: Never mind, v1.03 has F5 Continue Smile

Sadly though, the F5 Continue doesn't continue where you last entered the code but right where you died. That feels like a cheat, so I'm back at entering the code every time I die. Is there way this could be changed?

I suggested Victor to have an option in the menu to enable F5 without the passwords. Easier if you want your children to play it.

Yes, I do love this game, along with Salamander, the two games that took much of my childhood time Smile And I finished MoG back in 1991 or 1992, with no Internet, no BBS's, no walkthroughs, just randomly hitting all walls in the castle looking desperately for the cross, until half a year later I heard some strange sound hitting a wall while falling from a small platform in the middle of a pit...

I am just as happy as when the MOG Remake was made by Brain Games, especially when Naramura's graphics came to light.
Just a point. I don't know if it was addressed already, but I could not see the special items that required special events. I knew they were there, for playing so many times, but they only appeared in the inventory.

Hi, has anyone played this on a VG8235? I tried it today and it seems the reading of the keyboard is not working on the VG8235. Already in the menu the cursors don’t work, space can start the game but immediately the game is paused. The enhanced MSX1 version I have on my SD seems to have the same issue (I think it is the FRS patched version).

Obviously (in hind sight) the issue was not with the VG8235 but with the mouse connected to port 1! I guess somehow the routines from FRS mess up with a mouse in port 1.

I think it is visually evident that the current icon does not correspond to the original. This is what the equivalent of a possible single coin in MSX1 would look like.

Have you ever wondered what the first icon represents? Is it a missile? Or a quiver of arrows horizontally? If you look at it as a quiver of arrows, the new icon can still be improved and made sharper, as it currently looks like a fire coming out of a missile. So here is two version of modified quiver of arrows (along with the double coins), the second version is my favorite.

The only one we have nothing to say about is the key that has kept the original shape to perfection! ;-D

Possible SCC cartridge detection bug ?
I tried the ROM on a classic flashed cartridge (Non-SCC).
Put it in a cartridge port of my Tr, and put the Snatcher SCC Sound cartridge in the other cartridge port.
I can select the SCC from the game menu, but there no SCC sound comes out... Question
So, is there something bad on my side ?

The SCC only works in the flashrom... as a normal SCC game... sorry...

The SCC mapper and the SCC sound form an assembly located in the same slot. It's possible separate them but it complicates sound management and slows down games. In the past, a cartridge with SCC mapper but without SCC sound support was justifiable but not nowaday.

Ah, for some reason I interpreted that there were new effects from these cartridge combinations. I suppose not.
