And John Ritman's BATMAN. After a while, Batman crosses his arms and starts taping with his foot. That's a cool one. And IIRC, there's something like that in JACK THE NIPPER.

Anyway, the best one is the KNIGHTMARE pause sequence. Wait for a while and you'll see what I mean Wink

I prefer Casio games pause sequences. Youkai Yashiki is great. Wink

Another things that MSX games are missing: Better game menus and animated opening screens. Almost all games in the last ten years have something moving on the background (just a simple pattern would do the trick).

For me it is a matter of design. You can have static screens and backgrounds and have an excellent look. But if we are discussing this subject (menu graphics, little sprite animations), do this mean that we all agree with the current game development level?

For me, it is not a matter of adding more graphics. It is a matter of looking for new game concepts. I should point that this is our problem: we are coding the same game, the same concept. There is a lack of ideas! And of course I am guilty 'cause I'm just releasing remakes Sad

I don't care whether a game is original or not. If someone could do a 'new' Usas, by all means: do it! Likewise I don't expect to hear complaints when they get 'yet another RPG', as long as it's a good game. That's actually the only odd 'rule' in the MSXdev rules, the statement that original games are preferred.. that's almost impossible.. Tongue

Don't you forget Charles Bronson in Death Wish III? When no bullets left you get a new animation while you try to shoot! Tongue

That was nice! But must say, that I always thought that Bronson was farting and then waved his hands to make his fart fly longer making punks sick! Tongue

Yeah, simple title screen animation immediately makes game look better! You don´t even need more sprites or characters, just use ingame graphics and sprites and make your hero and enemies run and jump around title screen!

One of my favourites is Mark Turmell´s TOY BIZARRE (c=64, published by Activision), in title screen, below game´s title there is one platform and under it there´s longer platform. Hero keeps just runnin´ and jumpin´ there left and right, dodging toy soldier, and even it´s very simple thing, it looks really neat!! (because of good animation and neat jumping routine) And if you wait few seconds, game title starts "flash" a bit same way like MASK III title does.

And when you start game (or get to next day) in-game screen scrolls to screen, and it has TWO different ways of scroll!! Slow one looks like 8 pixel scroll and there´s train engine noise Smile and fast one is really fast and sounds like rocket zooms past! Smile Very simple indeed, but looks really great!!

There´s nothing wrong with previous dev games, there are lots of excellent looking games, and I didn´t mean that everybody should start to make little neat animations or ultra-neat titlescreen animations, I just give some ideas for programmers! Smile Static screens are allright. I just wished I could see something yet more nicer! Wink

As if programmers always do the same, no new ideas are used (except maybe new better routines) and games may start looking same..... that´s why I suggested making little animations. Smile If you don´t have enough imagination for little animations or moving background animations, then just try and play different games, and please try and play games of other computer systems too, not just msx games. Smile And you surely get some ideas from old games! Smile There´s nothing (too) bad if you use ideas of other programmers. But maybe not it´s not wise to use ideas taken from these dev games, as they are too new games... Wink and play and watch games of "better" machines like Atari St and Amiga. You can always adapt those ideas for MSX, just use fewer colours and maybe little less animation etc. Just Use that IDEA, do not care if graphics are impossible for msx! Smile

MaSaXi:

Altough I know that you're not an assembler guy, you're really into the gaming! Why don't you join efforts with some game developer and pixel artist in order to design such a game? There're programmers around and graphists too, but there's a lack of game designers/producers.

Just design a good game, taking elements from wherever you want, and try to go for it. Development becomes quite easy when the design stage has been carefully planned and executed. The other way round does work, but it is not efficient. First: design. Second: coding.

The only thing that you have to bear in mind is the MSX requirements and hardware limitations. A good programmer will provide you with interesting facts and hints.

Although language could be a barrier, try to find some volunteers at the Karoshi forum or at MRC development forum. Just prepare an interesting yet feasible idea and promote it!

Back on topic, I'd like to see a better MSX1 port of GREEN BERET. The Sinclair Spectrum version rocks!

Actually not, as that flame looked too good! :P :)

Really, I was thinking something very much simpler. :P I was thinking simple animations, which do not eat too much memory. When I talked about life-like animations, I didn´t exactly mean that tiles or sprites should look like things in real life, but they could have some extra frames which make they act like in real life. :) But if someone makes such flame or other life-like thing to his game, I´ll be glad, of course! :)

By the way, how much memory that flame animation needs?
