Sp8 Invaders for me, because it's so polished and I like the Atari 2600-feel (especially the sound) of it. Thought Danger Tower was nice as well, but the game play is a bit too shallow (for me, that is). In third place comes La Corona Encantada, like Sp8 Invaders it doesn't have an MSX-feel, it's ZX-Spectrum. Well done though.
A big thanks to all the participants.

These early results seems to confirm my opinion... I personally think that the we'll see a race between "Deep Dungeon" and "La Corona Encantada" for the first place. All the other games are -technically speaking- impressive but IMHO they're just not as fun to play as these two (Sorry)

BTW I gave my vote to "Deep Dungeon", because I think that the "roguelike" genre used by the game is a more original concept (well, at least on the MSX of course). While I enjoyed playing "La Corona Encantada" I think that is too similar to "Phantomas Saga: Infinity" (also made by Karoshi Games)

I think it'll be DD as well, dunno about the runner-up tho, I wouldn't just rule out Danger Tower yet.

Maybe your intellectual capacity is not high enough to appreciate peek-a-boo, but its a quite liked game to some new MSXers.

I'm sorry Daniel. I have been one of the first person to believe in your talent when you have introduced BlueMSX to the world (you probably don't even remember about me, back in the days when I wrote you about zip support in BlueMSX 1.20) and I was really impressed when I first heard Peek-a-boo digitized speech and saw the onscreen graphics. You have a lot of talent for sure, and no one can deny that.

But IMHO Peek-a-boo it's an extremely boring game; it's not fun at all to me. I have to tell you. Sorry.

I'm expressing just my opinion, but I really believe that if there's something we all should learn from this year MSXDEV is this: an impressive tech demo it's not necessarily a good game; of course, this doesn't apply only to peek-a-boo but also to a lot of games presented in these last 3 years.

The target is really kids between 1 and 5 years old so of course I understand that that game isn't fun to play for anyone that are active here on MRC. But it is a fun game for the target audience (at least amongst our young testers as long as they kept focused on a computer game Wink ).

I for example don't like the La Corona Encantada genre at all, but I still think its one of the best games this year, in fact the best game in many aspects. So fun to play and best game is not necessarily the same thing. As for playability, my personal favorite is Sp8 invaders.

But I must say that peek-a-boo is in no way intended to be a tech demo, In fact its not that techy at all. But I do have a 1.5 year old daughter that happens to love Elmo, so I thought it was appropriate to make a an MSX game that she could play. We actually did focus quite a lot on playability and ease of use for young kids when we did the game and by judging our kids response it seems to have succeeded. Anyways, just some background...

My baby likes Peek-a-boo (actually he hammers on the keyboard too much and this prevents me to let him continue).
One note: I would have added a state to the key press, e.g. allowing Elmo appears only on key release.
Now if the baby keeps the pressed keys (e.g. because he parked a toy truck of 20Kg on the computer) the game keeps going on.

PS the evolution of Deep Dungeon will be Deep Dungeon Adventure
The new version is ongoing, it will be 48K and will be a real HW (99% of prob).
The game is an improvement of the current DD for msxdev with some options suggested here
The extra room is taken for a surprise ;-)

I reached level 6 in Danger Tower on my TR and it seems a clean and polished game.
Greetings! Only with my TR I noted the good music FM sound.
What kind of tracker and player do you use?
On bluemsx I cannot activete the FM PAC, neither when emulating a TR,
but it is perfectly detected on the real HW.
Any explanation?

Deep Dungeon all the way for me. In a second place I'd bet for La Corona Encantada.

Both are very well made game. But La Corona Encantada, in spite of its gorgeous (ZX-Like) graphics is a somewhat dull game (you can only jump and nothing more). Deep Dungeon of course is also based on an old idea, but one that is not so available for the MSX, and also has that "I must keep exploring" feeling. Smile

I voted Tomb of Genghis Khan even if it´s a bit too difficult. But hang on, game became easier when I read you need to use SHIFT key too... Tongue

I wish that author would fix that unfair "jet set willy - style bug", which kills every life of jonny when he drops into some death trap (can be found on room 3). It should be easy to fix it, just make computer remember the last room entered before death trap room and remember screen location where player is positioned when entering that room. Smile

Another thing what could be fixed is sprite collision detection which seems easily happen to kill player even there looks to be several pixels between player and monster. And I am not talking about that acid drop, acid drops are easy to dodge. Smile

To the author and to everybody else: Tomb of Genghis Khan is NOT too difficult game. If you are person, who wants everything NOW, then it is not your game. It is somewhat easy game when you just want to look each room for little moment and look what the monsters are doing. Smile

And I like it´s half spectrum - half msx - screen 2 look! Smile Music is surely composed by same guy who did musical score for Caverns of Titan. Smile

Thanks for a good game, I wish some sequel to this! Smile

Runner-up is SP8, thanks to it´s Atari 2600 look and nice playability!! Smile I wish sequel to this too! Wink (with Atari 2600 like sounds, thank you!Wink)

But I thank everybody who programmed games for MSX-dev(s). Smile No matter if it´s BASIC or machine code game, game is game! Smile

Hey MäSäXi, you appear to like to see MSX graphics looking as either ZX Spectrum or Atari 2600, and you like to hear MSX music sounding as C64.
...Uhm, what did you like about MSX again?!? Big smile Tongue

Call me schizoid if you want. Tongue No, don´t call me, I´ll call you...! Tongue

well, I like MSX too... Wink

but of course I like MSX look much more than Spectrum look, especially on when graphics start to get monochromic, but colourful spectrum graphics can look nice, especially when aided with sprites. Smile

For me, La Corona Encantada is a nice example of excellent Spectrum-ish graphics.
I don't miss the colors at all since all the sprites are so convincingly drawn.

I don't understand "I Need Speed" having zero points.

Personally, I really suck at racing games, so I didn't get too far.

But to me this game surely has quality. You can see that there's effort put into this.
If you like racing games, look at it.

I don't think you should take the poll too serious. There are about 11 games that are much better than Hose Diogo Martinez - The Bussas Quest but still it gets quite a lot of points. I also like I need speed. Its one of the most polished games and is really retro.

Well, those votes for Hose Diogo Martinez - The Bussas Quest maybe should be regarded as 'protest' votes.

I can't blame them. There you are, as enthousiastic MSX user waiting for new games free to download.
I mean, those developers are here to produce free games, right?
Any game and its program/graphics/music are made in one day anyway. It means nothing.

And what do these so-called "MSX developers" make with their free time for all those dedicated users?
Not even a simple MSX1 Solid Snake/SD-Snatcher in 32 KB!
I mean, Christ, do I even have to click with my mouse to download those free games?
Tsss.

That lazy-ass, underskilled bastards! Killing their motivation only serves them right. Smile
This way, people won't be deluded anymore to sacrifice their family time to make shitty free games anymore.
No games at all is better than shite games one can only poop upon without producing anything yourself, so it's clearly a win-win situation. Wink
