Probably silly question but I can't seem to create a working bootdisk.
I format a floppy on MSX2, put command2.com and msxdos2.sys on the disk (from CF) and it boots in basic when only the floppy is in drive A:
What am I missing here?

You need MSXDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM for a regular MSX-DOS disk.

In order to boot in MSXDOS2 you will also need a MSXDOS2 cartridge plugged (or any device with the MSX-DOS2 ROM) as well as the MSXDOS2.SYS and COMMAND2.COM in the disk drive, along with the other two files.

MSXDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM are not necessary if you only want to boot the MSX-DOS2. But the presence of a MSX-DOS2 BIOS is indeed a requirement. Your CF cartridge contains the MSX-DOS2 BIOS inside.

If you're removing the CF cartridge, you'll need at least a stand-alone cartridge containing the MSX-DOS2 BIOS.

Aaahh..! now I understand why it does work on my Turbo and not on the Philips.
So command.com and msxdos.sys work from disk, and for command2.com and msxdos2.sys to work I need the cartridge..
If the Philips 8250 is upgraded to MSX2+, do you still need that MSX2DOS cartridge?

Yes, only MSXturboR comes with the MSXDOS2 rom (actually 'mixed' with the Panasonic DISK rom).

Sorry for the silly question, but when you talk about a "CF cartridge" this is only an IDE cart with a CF>IDE Adapter on top, right ?

the format for dos2 is not the same for dos1 , the sector 0 is different
if you want a plain dos2 FDD on your 8250 format with a DOS2 cartridge in the slot
also exist a command FIXDISK for writing the sector 0 in a dos1 FDD
type HELP on your prompt A> on DOS2
