I just got myself an MSX about a month ago, unfortunately any original Joypads I see on Ebay are criminally expensive, so I was wondering if anyone is aware of 3rd party options, or other controllers that are compatible for 2 button games. Thanks Smile

You can get a JoyMega adapter and then pair it up with any inexpensive Sega Genesis controller.

My favourite MSX controller is the Panasonic FS-JS222 by the way.

Oh awesome! This seems perfect, I already have too many Genesis controllers lying around so I'll just make one my permanent MSX controller LOL!

PS: I've seen those controllers in pics before, and honestly I think the design looks so sleek and comfy as heck!

Some homebrew games and software even support 3 or 6 buttons. SofaRun is also able to patch some games with support for the additional buttons, to remove the need for having a keyboard on hand to open menus (which is where the “sofa” in the name comes from).

Are most of the 3 or 6 button games for homebrew? Or did some official releases support it?

Only homebrew, JoyMega is from after the commercial days (despite being a very simple circuit to build). I think it only came around in the late 2000s, at least I haven’t seen it before then.

I can to the same realization. Alternatively, you can hack up a Genny/MD pad buy moving some wires. A local store to carries MSX and has a surplus of 3-button pads that I modded so he can offer a "free pad" with every MSX computer purchase.

It's been a while, but I recall using this guide also:
