The same as in te taperecorder but without te Philips plug at the other end. So jack cable 3,5mm (I think) mono. I think stereo cable will work as well.

Since last week I am the happy owner of build #392.

Initially I had some issues with the supplied SD card which prevented it from booting. Via Guilded I got excellent support and everything is now working again. Google Translate does wonders and English questions are promptly answered. It was solved by getting another SD card.

But to get to the bottom of this and to understand what was happening I started what I like to do. Thinkering with things, opening it up, and to see how it works.

This led me down a rabbit-hole where I uncovered the boot process, made it visible, prevented it from starting the MSXVR runtime and installing other things on it like a proper desktop environment and OpenMSX.

How to do this yourselves, plus more, is now properly documented in the wiki.

P.S. I intend to create a YouTube video soon where I explain the process so that you can do it yourselves as well.

Could you not just install Raspbian or Ubuntu on a second SD card and boot from that SD? I would say this should work as well (of course you don’t have the MSXVR specific stuff on that card Hannibal but you can switch cards). That way you keep the original card untouched.

Very interesting! SOurceror, if you install Linux + OpenMSX on the MSXVR, do the cartridge slots still work? (just wondering if the extra hardware is recognized)

@sdsnatcher, yes you can boot raspbian from another SD, it works.
@santiontanon, no the cartridgeslots work with a proprietary protocol that only the MSXVR runtime understands. But WiFi, USB, WiFi work. And it is still in a nice retro form factor with a great mechanical keyboard.

Btw. the aim of this for me is to understand the inner workings of the machine. And the more time I spend on this the more I start to appreciate what the MSXVR team has done. Their runtime is massive, it runs old content and completely new MSXVR content that is a lightyear from what we got in the 80s. Yes it has it’s flaws but what is there is great.

Just out of curiosity, what's the performance of MSX Turbo R emulation under that set-up? Can it run full speed? Someone posted this video of the patched version of Youkai Yashiki running in a MSXVR emulating a MSX Turbo R, and it seems to struggle to keep it running at 75~80% speed (and it's an MSX1 games)...

According the manual that should be working. So if it isn't then you can post it as a bug on Guilded.

Example from the manual:
10 GET DATE T$
20 PRINT T$

There is a channel on Guilded called "MSXVR [Official]", there are a lot of sub channels in there. The sub channel "BUGS [VRBASIC]" is the one I think you are looking for.
