You can't use the 1.44MB of a drive. The diskROM and controller only know about 720kB at most. You can still build in such drives, but only use them as DD (not HD), so 720kB.
About the disk drive: where do you think those MSX users would store their data on? Saving a text? Saving a program? Saving your data? Saving your savegame? Storing your database? Using your compiler? And so on
Ah, that's kind of what I figured. DiskROM would probably be feasible to upgrade, but if the controller itself doesn't support 1.44MB, it'd be too much trouble.
There are no MSXes that know about HD disk drives. Also, it's not worth it either. If you want more storage, look at the suggestions above (Sunrise IDE, or SD/MMC card, etc.).
