Hello! on the wiki pedia article about metal gear it says that this game was planned to be ported to Amiga computers and some claim that even pictures of this exist. Is it true?Did anyone of you see these pictures? You know many times i wished that metal gear 1 could be ported to amiga as amiga was the second computer i had.

I had a 128kbyte cracked version by sma international on my vg8235 philips msx2 that used to crash randomly at elevators,or generally the game froze on various locations with no reasons, and i remember how i wished there was an amiga port of it so i could finish it.Does anyone know why this cracked version of sma international crashed randomly on elevators? It showed a ->6 symbol i think and then there was always a dreadful reset.I managed to finish this game years later on my amiga in fmsx emulator.

Best regards

I know there's one on the Commodore 64, haven't heard of an Amiga one though.

This Amiga port of Metal Gear rumour sounds a lot like the arcade version of Knightmare that goes around the net...

I don't know the details, but there were more games that had things missing in their 128kb cracked versions - probably a memory limitation. I remember that version of Metal Gear, it had slowdowns in the elevator and indeed random lockups. There also exists a version requiring 256kb that's performing perfectly.

Other examples were the 128kb version of Nemesis (lockup after level 5), Nemesis2 (no music, lockup before the game goes "reverse" ), F1 Spirit (no music and outright weird behaviour - slowdown, "ghost cars" ), Kings Valley 2 (crashes in edit mode and special stages), Pennant Race (random graphics corruption and lockups).
The weirdest I remember is a 64(?)kb version of Vampire Killer with game master cheat and no music, which would also randomly hang up (and "hang" simon belmont in the curtains).

The rumour is probably related to the Knightmare prototype, which does exist (it's dumped and can be found on the net), but it's an entirely different game made by Gottlieb, not Konami.

I have to say that this version for the 128kbyte memory mapper by SMA international works perfectly on ALL msx emulators that i have tested (with the exception of a single room that has glitches in the graphics) and there are no crashes on the emulators when i go to elevators!only on msx2 it crashes,so i suspect that some kind of universal poke could fix it?
What i cant understand though is this,if the game is only 1 mbit (the actual cartridge of mgear is 128kbytes),then how did they make the version having more kbytes? Is it uncompressed version of the 1mbit version the other version that is for 256 kbytes?

Did martos crack the metal gear for 1mbit?Is there a proper fixed version with no glitches for 128 memory mapper?

The OS always takes some memory in the upper 16KB, so you can't use all 128KB.
Also, many cartridge mappers have 8KB pages compared to the 16KB pages of a 'standard' memory mapper, which further complicates things to have a 128KB game running on a 128KB machine without too much performance penalties.
This is just guessing though; I've never tried making cracks like that (I've only done some tape to disk cracks Tongue although I never spread them).

Could it be that some part of the game was transfered to the VRAM?If msx has 128 of vram and 128 of user ram does this mean that part of the game could be transfered to the vram and with bank switching to be transfered in the main ram?I can see no other way how could a game of 128kbytes would run on a machine with <=128 kbyte memory mapper.Sorry if what i say sounds wrong to the eyes of the msx experts,i just wanted to see how this things work in the msx.

before you start metal gear (the crashing dump) type vdp(10)=255, the game should crash a whole lot less in the elevator.

I somehow found this out when I was much younger then I am now Wink

Nowadays just use an emulator with the rom image.

Actually, there IS Knightmare "arcade" - which in that case it was an MSX disguised as an arcade (made by Ademir...!) running the game on coins :)

So there were some Knightmare arcade - at least here in Brazil after all B-)

Hmmm, in that case he must have patched the game in order to show the message 'insert coins' and to use another key (not space) to start/continue the game. Where is this 'arcade' version? It should be funny to see 'insert coins' in the main screen. Smile
