When Chester kicks Adol into the lava pit, at a certain point he discovers a herb growth. How do I make him pick it up?

And on the subject of herbs, how do I use them?

In case someone else stumbled on this, it's the shift key and the reason Adol can't pick it up is that he can only carry one herb at a time.
