It all depends. I intend to hire a video editor. Either he, or someone else, would need to hand type every line of dialogue and sync it to the audio. It's a big task.

Maybe you can get some help of volunteers to translate spoken dialogs...just an idea :-)

John, congratulations on making the KS goal!

I would back the kickstarter but the last (and only) 2 KS projects I backed have not been released and I'm still waiting for some form of delivery on what was promised --- they are both 8bit/retro gaming related. I'll certainly buy a copy when it's available for real Smile

I like the idea of having sub-titles more. Voice overs are mostly horrible when you actually speak the language which is spoken. So maybe have an original voice track and a 'dub' track so that people who understand Japanese get the original context.... there will always be something that will be lost in translation. Remember you're documenting history here Smile

1) I really wonder what those guys think of their games being played even today
2) what they might think about fan translations (if they have been created for games they work on)
3) How they feel about the 'pirating' (downloading and emulators) of these games. If they see it as money stolen or as flattery and a sense of having produced some of the best games to-date.
4) how they feel about the lack of imagination (if they feel like that) on modern games. Everything looks realistic and most of the modern games are war/sports simulations anyway.

Most of the guys you are going to interview are pioneers so I also wonder if they had inspiration from other sources.

I know I congratulated you in private already, but congratulations again and I know many of us are very excited about the upcoming book. : )

I agree with Vampier that subtitles do tend to come out better than voice overs in most cases. Also, it leaves the original Japanese dialogue intact for native Japanese people to be able to understand in full context. If money and time is an issue in regards to inserting so much text, I think there would be volunteers who would be interested in helping with this. I know how to edit video and add subtitles personally. I hardly think I'm the best out there, but I could certainly do it if there was no other way.

Alas, I still haven't secured Nishi-san, regarding the creation of the MSX, but some on here might like to know that I *should* be interviewing the main creator of Golvellius, his artist, in addition to various T&E staff, including the creators of Hydlide, Undeadline and Rune Worth. Plus I might have some other MSX surprises in store. Wink

Hi, John!
Could you help me to contact Eiji Kato, the programmer of Hydlide? I solved a quiz he proposed almost 30 years ago.

Also, if you can interview some people from Compile, can you ask them if they were related to Momonoki House (Peach Up creators) Both of them used the same graphics compression rutine in their products (if my memory serves me well).

Guillian, regarding Mononoki House: AFAIK momonoki house was affiliated with Compile. I read a long time ago that they created it to tailor to adult games and compile for the rest of the games or something to that effect. Probably a marketing positioning type thing.

Talking about Compile... some very old games have a copyright mark "NISSO CORPORATION"... Can you ask if that is just an early name for Compile? (Like "Programmers-3".)

Unfortunately I only have 3 T&E contacts, none of whom are programmers (just designers and graphic artists). But I will mention to Mr Naito the secret message. Perhaps he's still in contact with Mr Kato. I noticed in the topic that you created Java based tool. What exactly was the puzzle/solution?

I've got two people from Compile, so will ask about Mononoki House.

For the record: I am very hesitant to bring up secret messages. In the past developers have stopped replying to emails if you even hint that you know of such things. Best leave well alone.
