I'm interested if the UART supports at least 57600 bps (115200 would be even better) and the price is right. I would like to use it to transfer files to/from the Mac, and experiment with Nestor's Internet API.

It might be me, but isn't file exchange with RS-232C just very clumsy? Better use something like Nowind, I'd say.... and for internet stuff, perhaps the DenYoNet is a better option?

Anyway serial protocols are pretty standard and widely supported, so I think it’s a more versatile tool than each of those cartridges you mention are individually... E.g. to interface with Raspberry Pi / Arduino stuff, script with the standard Unix tool chain, etc. Serial program upload is a common way to do cross development on real hardware.

JaviLM: Note that MIDI is also a serial interface at 31250 bps. You might have one of those already laying about. That baud rate is usually not supported on regular RS232 ports though, so you’ll have to connect to it through a MIDI interface on your PC (or joystick port).

No, it isn't.

As Laurens said, serial ports are standard just about everywhere. The Nowind and DenYoNet interfaces are not (even if they were available).

Plus, a serial port has lots of uses.

I guess you can buy a Nowind at... Nowind. Ask next Saturday if you wish.

In all of my MSX life, I've never used RS-232c other than with a modem and I can't say I missed something. Exchanging floppy's was the easiest way to exchange software between MSX and PC's and nowadays I do it with Nowind..

That's fine. However, for me personally, a serial port would be much more useful than a single function, non-standard hardware extension.

Sure. It was the same for me, once upon a time. How many floppy drives did you say your modern PC has?

You keep talking about what YOU use. That's completely irrelevant to the fact that, to ME, a standard serial port would be much more useful than a Nowind and a DenYoNet together.
