One game I've never seen done well is Outrun. As in: decent controls, fast and smooth landscape movement, and colourful large sprites.

IMHO the only decent conversion of Outrun to an 8 bit system was on the PC Engine (and it had a 16 bit video processor). Except for this one, all Outru(i)n(ed) conversions range from mediocre to awful. Sad

I think that might be a sequence of individual bad ports though, as various other broadly similar titles are excellent — like Chase HQ on the CPC for a frame buffer example, or Road Rash for the Master System for probably a raster effects example.

Pinball Dreams doesn’t seem all too challenging on MSX2… just never done.

For the Amstrad CPC it's already far underway:

Even the C64 already had a good try:

really?! you didn't like Stunt Car Racer?!?! OMG I spent soooo many hours playing that game on the Amiga! The appeal to me was that is was a game that took quite a while to learn how to control the car, how to control the speed, the turns, the damage, etc. quite a learning curve, but once you master it, it was very rewarding! But perhaps it's just that I like that kind of games, one of my other favorites from that time period was "4D Sports Driving" Smile

Amongst my friends the biggest appeal of SRC was creating and sharing insane custom tracks. If you look at the spiritual successor TrackMania, that still seems to be the biggest appeal.

Oh, I love TrackMania! (Just got TrackMania Turbo a few weeks ago! and I remember spending hours on the original TrackMania nations!!!). So, indeed, that's a huge appeal!

I just took a look on YouTube, and it is indeed a very decent port.

What about pacland? It does scroll there are some big sprites...... Challenging on msx2

MSX1: Ghost n Goblins, because the scroll and big sprites moving.

MSX2: Turrican II, because the lateral scroll and big bosses. But maybe using "set scroll" feature and SC4 for a really fast action should be enough.

I think sc4 would work, very well actually. Though graphics are impacted, sc4 is maybe more suited for original graphics designed with the screen mode in mind.

And Turrican II on MSX2+… totally possible.

Btw, I would like to say, if anyone takes this thread as inspiration, rather than porting an existing game across, maybe take inspiration from it and make an original game with your own twist Wink.
