Was Aleste Gaiden (MSX2) released as a standalone game?

I was searching for Aleste Gaiden on Gamefaqs and the results I got was something called "Disc Station Special Aki-Gou".
I then went to generation-msx to search for the game and got no hits.

Now I wonder, was Aleste Gaiden ever released as a stand alone game or was it only released in those Disk Station compilation games?

Is Aleste Gaiden even the real name? Generation-MSX calls it Aleste Special:

"Notes: Aleste Special (aka: Aleste Special/Bio Challenge) is part of this Disc Station. "

It wasn't a standalone game. Just like you found out yourself, it was published on a special edition (autumn, apparently) of Compile's disk magazine Disc Station. The real name is Aleste Gaiden - Gaiden meaning something like 'supplementary story'. I think the name 'special' stems from a review in the Dutch MSX magazine MSX Gids. My theory is that the reviewer couldn't read the kanji, so decided to make things easy for himself by just dubbing it 'special'.

Someone already updated the GenMSX entry, it now says:

Notes: Aleste Gaiden (aka: Aleste Special/Bio Challenge) is part of this Disc Station.

(I think this is actually what the author wanted to write there...)

Is Disc Station Special 4 even dumped? I've only seen #2 and #5.

Interesting to know that. I always had this one as a standalone disk game. Maybe someone ripped it from the DS Special 4?

BTW, is there any English translation of this game?

It's just one dedicated disk of DSSP#4.

But, is there no DSSP#4 menu or something? Do the games load as if they were normal games? No menu to select from them or anything like that?

There is, but it isn't released (yet). I made a translation for WOOMB, but WOOMB ended before the English version got to be released. If everything goes well, the WOOMB English versions will become available again - as will the Aleste Gaiden translation.

Ah I see. But it WAS released back then, right?
