Brace yourself, because we're on a journey to explore new MSX software. The MSXdev crew has just announced the 18th edition of the popular game comp. MSXdev22 officially starts on the 1st of January 2022. Game on!

Exciting times, as the MSXdev game compo is about to roar again. Running since 2003, the MSXdev show has delivered nothing but outstanding MSX titles. If you are still in doubt, just have a look at last year's rendition which resolved over 30 entries with loads of prizes to win. It might have been the global pandemic that freed up some retro coding time, who knows. Let's just hope that MSXdev22 will be as good as the last.

While -in general- the MSXdev sails by the "Classic Style" format, some editions do offer a "Free Style" run. MSXdev22 is one of those editions; everything goes. As long as the game is an original MSX-platform creation, it can enter the jam. An expert jury will have the task to rate all craftmanship on originality, creativity, playability, polishment, integration, addictiveness, and everything else that rhymes with excellent.

The MSXdev team has set up a dedicated MSXdev22 page with all information needed to enter the compo.

Supporting MSXdev can be done by donating and/or sponsoring the show. You know the drill. All donations and sponsored items get transferred to winners.

So, there you have it - MSXdev22 is on!

Nice!
I'm ok with MSX-2 improvements, but to be able to run on first gen is very important to me

One can always add an MSX2 bonus to an MSX1 game, like an alternative palette, or extra sprites, or layered OR-sprites (should require planning though).

In theory, yes, but I estimated I'll be drawing 13 full screen-2's worth of graphics for my next adventure game, and given my preference to MSX1 over later ones, I'm not going to be drawing a second set for another display mode.

But this is just me, and I believe most other games would be able to have optional improvements for later gens.

Will there be a ranking by machine generation?
It would be strange to compare an MSX1 game with an MSX turbo R game.
Or at least 2 categories:
- MSX1
- Free for all (MSX > 1 or extension like V9990)

no, game entries are judged by their quality.

"Nemesis 2" vs "Seed of Dragon".

Your choice?

Not very realistic. Wink

But I really wish to finally have some MSX2+ games. Specially on screen-10.

Ranking games is going to be difficult indeed, but let's see what happens. I't going to be a fun year for the competition Smile

A port (like MSX-Wings) from a commercial game of other system would be allowed to compete on MSX Dev 22?
Asking for a friend Tongue
