Freestyle format or not, the MSX1 fortunately keeps its appeal to many developers. So here's the third MSXdev23 entry - the game Uchu Yohei, by FrankChesstein. With its remarkable appearance, it takes us on a futuristic and psychedelic ride.

Dive into a graphically pleasing platform adventure that will probably make you sweat, swear, and bang your head against the furniture for being so difficult and hard.

You can submit your own work here. Donating to the contest can be done here.

The adaptation of Retro Lines to MSX is an awesome idea and gave a quite unique result! Well done!

Really, it is not a bug, simply your gun is temporally banned if press fire when not is usual. However, it can be easily fixed if it is a playability inconvenience. I know there is a little bug in bosses, but I'm waiting for your suggestion before fixing it in case other bugs can be found.

the game is very long (and maybe difficult, I thought it wasn't). I hope you enjoy it

In a real TurboR ST it works fine using "opfxsd uchu.rom /k4" for instance (well, it needs a little change in frequency, maybe in the next version of the game) . Perhaps a correct mapper is needed to be selected.

from VR-DOS you can write "play uchu.rom /MODEL msx1 /MAPPER konami" ( similar your comment Smile )

At the game start, if you go right, entering the next room, it seems gun doesn't work at first, saw this on webmsx

It's a great achievement to create a colorful game, using only outline graphics. Really well done, I like the way this looks.

And it's a 1 Mbit rom, which probably means there will be a lot of screens to explore.

i really love this game, but only complaint; the jump button. I would love to use the [B] trigger, such a delicate luxury option on the MSX system. Whyyyyyyyyy the [UP] button?

There is a new version of the game, the changes are:

- Avoid shooting when climbing ladders, falling and other situations where it no have sense to shoot (such as @santiontanon pointed)
- Avoid jumping after climbing ladders (a bit annoying according to some users)
- a bit Little change in the map (to avoid incongruence among different world)
- Change in the final gate of the last world
- Always force 50 Hz, for 2+ and TR and other MSXs originally from Japan. I am not sure whether it is good or not, the idea is that music can be listened correctly. Making clear that the game is designed (and to be played) just for the first generation of the MSX.

It ought to be fixed

In the early eighties that was the usual way to jump Big smile and because i love using arrows to play. Arrows + Space (simple & easy)

Thank to everybody for your words. Good feedback

Very bad idea ! 99% of Japanese TVs/monitors/upscalers don't support the 50 Hz.
We must never force the 50/60 Hz.

How do you force 50/60hz on a MSX1, thats a new one for me... The VDP model number and the xtal generate the video standard according to my knowledge.

I thought so. I will change it for pressing '1' when booting to change to 50hz, I suppose it will be better.

The MSXdev team is going to ban me for so many changes

Most (Assembly) music replayers by now have a solution to equalize the interrupt for both 50hz and 60hz.
I don't know which one you are using, but there's probably a way to fix this.

It is not only the music but also the gameplay in general. Enemies faster for upper generations (2+ & TR), and maybe it can modify their behaviour.

Anyway, I have sent another version of the game. The only change I have made is the possibility of selecting 50hz when booting the rom pressing the DOWN-ARROW in the keyboard. And polish the text file Smile.

Sincerely, I hope this were the last one. Thanks anyway.

The bit 7 of the 002Bh address can tell you if the MSX is at 50/60Hz by default. It should be possible to modify the tempo according to this value.

Finally got some time to sit down and try this one properly, I have to say that it got me hooked, nice exploration, very expressive graphics, not too frustrating.

Nice one, I will have to play it in depth.

+1 on that. At least make it a choice! I play lot of old 8-bitters and indeed the msx being able to address to firebuttons should be exploited.
I really enjoy playing this btw, congratulations!

Finally you were able to convince me. A new version was sent to the contest adding the button B of joystick for Jumping. No alternative keys in keyboard due to the variety of MSX keyboards.

There was a little problem with the slot detection in 2+, TR and maybe other devices, I have sent another version of the game ( again Sad ). I hope this one can run perfectly in every machine.
