SDCC is a C compiler for microcomputers that generates Z80 compatible codem released under the GPL license at Sourceforge. On the website of Avelino you can find a patch for this compiler, which makes the SDCC compiler generate MSXDOS compatible code.

On October 5th the first edition of this patch was released, as of today a new version is available. The new version includes a library which makes it possible to access files with handles in MSXDOS2.

Nice development, are there any tests done comparing it to ascii-c?

No, there are no tests because i haven't the ascii-c compiler :-). If any body want to do some velocity and/or space tests between sdcc and ascii-c generated code, please bring it to the community. Thanks :-).

Keep in mind ASCII-C is K&R C, while SDCC is ANSI C. This means a lot of people won't be comfortable writing code in ASCII-C.

Then maybe it's better to compare SDCC to HiTech C.
BTW, one reason for me to choose HiTech over SDCC in the past, was that its code generateor produced something that was definitely not standard Z80 assembly; 8080 code maybe, but it looked more like 6510-code-forged-to-something-similar-to-Z80.

"Why, anybody can have a brain. That's a very mediocre commodity. Every pusillanimous creature that crawls on the Earth or slinks through slimy seas has a brain. Back where I come from, we have universities, seats of great learning, where men go to become great thinkers. And when they come out, they think deep thoughts and with no more brains than you have. But they have one thing you haven't got: a diploma." -Wizard of Oz. (http://www.garnersclassics.com/qoz.htm)

Please don't take this personally. This was the only funny quote I could find from a wizard.
