A brand new version of the opensource MSX emulator openMSX, version 0.6.1 was released today, along with Catapult, its GUI/launcher. The most important changes are:

  • Ability to switch machines and extensions at run time.
  • Harddisk images can be changed in the openMSX console or specified on the command line.
  • IDE CD-ROM support: reads ISO images, no audio tracks yet.
  • Major V9990 improvements.
  • New OpenGL 2.0 based renderer "SDLGL-PP", with features: scale factor 4, TV scaler, 3D monitor effect and horizontal stretch (MSX aspect ratio).
  • New video effects: noise, brightness/contrast, monochrome monitor.
  • New debugger features: watchpoints (like breakpoints for I/O and memory), Uninitialized Memory Read detector and DI/HALT (hanging MSX) detector.
  • Made console easier to use by having help and TAB completion for more commands, and a new "about" command to search for a command by keyword.
  • Support differences between AY8910 and YM2149 PSG.
  • Support for V9938 with only 16KB VRAM (SVI-738).
  • Support for Ninja-tap.

For the complete list of changes, please read the release notes. You can download openMSX 0.6.1 here; source, Win32 and Mac OS X (PPC) packages are available. Packages for Debian and Gentoo are expected soon in their native distribution systems.

Great news. IMHO the only thing openMSX really needs now is an integrated GUI for mounting disks, tapes and rom images directly.

I'm afraid that netplay will involve serious privacy issues... the world will come to an end if emulator-developers add that feature, for sure! </sarcasm>. Really, it would be a great feature indeed! Mind you, at i-revo Konami already has a few multiplayer MSX(PLAYer) games on offer.

Don't worry, the GUI debugger is coming up! If you join our IRC channel, you can get some beta version of it, if you like. That goes for everyone, of course.

Great news!

OpenMSX 0.6.1, BlueMSX 2.5 ... I'm waiting for the next msx emulator comparison. Any chance of we see that happening any time soon? Smile

Well, I think it's rather safe to say that both emulators will be in the top 2 Smile

I've laid out the basics for the next big EmuComp upgrade, but am still far from actually testing all emus and writing the article. Your patience will be rewarded though! Smile

Updates would be great, but we have to realize that it is quite a lot of work, especially if you want to do it thoroughly.
Often, it is true though that many small updates (only the next version of one emulator) would be much easier to start with (less work) and thus easier to keep up than collecting a lot of small updates and doing a big update. This means that the lump of work only gets bigger, meaning a smaller chance that you have time for it.
The problem is, if you're once in a period of little free time, the small updates will already add up to a bigger one...

Nah, we can nag about this for a long time, but I'm really not surprised it is not that often updated. It's just a lot of work.

BiFI - that might be the case, but that's better than no update at all, right?
