Caravan Boomer pre-orders

Caravan Boomer pre-orders

MRC user sd_snatcher tipped us to have a look at Caravan Boomer, a promising new shmup in development for the MSX2. It is planned to be released around 2019/2020, and the pre-orders have been open.

Although the information flow is low for this new piece of MSX2 software, it sure looks pretty. Very colorful screen shots are shown from a horizontal space shooter that reminds us of Konami's Space Manbow and Parodius. Yes, exciting indeed. The game appears to have two modes; normal and a mode called "caravan". According to Bo DSGN, the game is more oriented on boss-battles than the classic shooters and has more than 10 end bosses.

The game is developed by N.I & Bo DSGN and targeted for MSX2 screens 4 and 5, completely written in Assembly. Bo DSGN is an international team with French, Japanese and Chinese members. You can pre-order one of the limited physical boxed copies (2xDD). Price 5000 yen, which is about 40 euros.

Hi guys!
I'm a programmer of Caravan Boomer. Bo Dsgn is in charge of planning and graphics.
The music is made by many musicians in MGS format. They are wonderful music played with OPLL and PSG.
I'm struggling to run out of disk space due to lots of graphics and music. I've packed them well, such as using custom compression routines.
We hope you'll be looking forward to completing it.

Are you planning to use one single disk? Why not using two, for example one for demos and another one for the game itself? Also will it be "hard disk installable"? Sorry I don't mean to bully you with so many questions, I just can't stop wondering how a floppy disk game is developed in the ROMs and SD cards era Big smile

No problem Smile
This game will consist of 2 disks. The game has about 20 stages and each disk contains 10 stages.
Perhaps the game will work by simply copying all the files to the hard disk.
We didn't choose ROM because the cost of making it was inestimable. We chose the floppy disk, which is the easiest format for everyone to run on an MSX2 machine.

Maybe you could try to use the BARGAIN library to compress the graphics? It was said to achieve excellent compression rates.

ROM version may be difficult because this game will be more than 2 megabytes.
In any case, we will consider more about them.

That's very important point so I dare to say. I have NEVER used Matra as a distributor. THEY have recently made use of me as a supplier of the new games. Those two stances may seem to be quite same to ordinary people, but for a creator there is a huge crif between them.

Please, consider a cartridge version. Nowadays in Europe almost all active groups release their games in cartridge format:

KAI MAGAZINE
MATRA
MSX Cartridge Shop (various developers)

Cartridge = zero hassle:

1. You don't need an MSX computer with FDD
2. Cartridges usually last forever
3. The game loads instantly

I'm pretty sure that today the price of cartridges (case+PCB) is much cheaper than years ago.

There’s certainly enough enthusiasm Smile. Maybe some Japanese or Korean MSX user could catch the idea to offer cartridge manufacturing and distribution services! That’d make it easier to publish in the cartridge format in Asia. A whole stack of new games on the shelves of BEEP would look very sexy Big smile.

Also I’m looking forward to see some videos, very eager to see and hear it in motion!

Cartridge is better than HDD, each and every MSX computer has cartridge slots while not everyone owns an HDD interface cartridge (or, e.g., a MegaFlashROM).

There is no reason to exclude one or the other.
I suggest doing three versions:
FDD, Cartridge and Digital Download.

As the practical concern, two floppy diskettes can be more expensive than a cartridge. Disk prices are soaring, it's not like the days you could buy them at 10 or 50 yen.
The cartridge's major drawback is you can't read it on PC to run on emulator, but PCs don't have FDD anymore either so that's trivial. Edit: Yes, it is not MSX FDD friendly either...

The release on floppy disk seems to me to be part of a new Japanese retro wave, I observe this also with other vendors and on other systems.
It's a nice way to market the software with the appropriate FanArt. That doesn't mean that the developers won't market the software title digitally or even make it available for free.
The preliminary version of the title (which by the way can also be obtained for a fee) can be tested at the MSX fair in Nijmegen. If your skills allow it, there may also be a chance to win the full version.

I checked some routines from the DEMO with openMSX... maybe I was not allowed.... sorry...

This has to be optimiced... just the Interrupt routine is a disaster....really slow... if you need help with this, please ,write me....

I had to tell this.... you shouldn´t launch this game like this...

@sd_snatcher: I'd like to see this game with one of your patches, like DynamicVsync and TurboFix.
From a first analysis of this demo there seems to be no control over the frames and all this makes me a little disappointed. Question

I got my yesterday. Wasn't expecting it yet. Very cool and strange thing it came from France...

Interesting fact that it doesn't work on Russian Yamaha MSX2. But booted on Trubro R.

Does anybody know why it wouldn't work on MSX2?

I have tried to contact the developers (I sent an email to the email address they put on the website), and no one responds. I have sent it from 2 different emails, but no one responds. Is it impossible to order the game?

bo wrote me, he is very surprised and of course also very pleased about the great demand.
The developers had not expected it, so a second edition is now being planned.
I am sure he will let us know details, please be a little patient.
